I learned that after I posted that, as I was reading through the encyclopedia they call the GWX User Manual.

the graphics on SHIV are much more cpu intensive then. The only thing that attracts me to III is the U-boats factor. Cooler to be a u-boat in the atlantic than allied sub in the pacific. Visualy SHIV is hard to step down from, the lighting and water, ship damage also, all vastly improved in IV.

There is a mod available on Subsim that ports the SH4 effects to SH3. I'm running some 15 to 20 mods in addition to GWX, and they make a lot of difference to the immersion.

Just started a new campaign using Sub Commander and a boatload of mods. September 1939: As the German war machine overruns Poland I'm in the Baltic sailing east from the Denmark-straights towards Danzig/Gdansk, looking for Polish ships to engage. Just south of Sweden my watch crew spot a Polish merchantman; I order the chief to close at flank speed and the watch officer to man the deck gun. After a brief action the Polish vessel is a burning hulk and sinking slowly. While my boat returns to its previous course I take a last look at my quarry trough the binocs... The hulk is burning profusely, periodically erupting in fuel explosions (like the one pictured above) sending huge fireballs into the air and blanketing the area with black oily smoke. There's a lot of debris in the water... and bodies. My heart sinks as I observe a lone Polish sailor swimming away from the sinking ship, and on the far side three or four more survivors are paddling away on a makeshift raft. I'm almost tearing up.

I love this game.

I see three.

There is a SH4 modding community on the Subsim forums too. I'm sure you can get it there. :)

I just went out and picked up Silent Hunter 4: Wolves of the Pacific + the U-boat addon (29.99 at Gamestop, of all places). I had -cough- acquired the game beforehand, but liked it enough to go plunk down the change for it. Must say it is well worth it. Now I can use mods, play online, and whatnot. Beautiful game, and the mods as I understand just make it better. I was kinda bummed out that my first patrol out of Pearl Harbor was to go deep into the harbor at Hiroshima and take pictures :| Having played it a little I kinda-sorta know what's going on, but seriously, into an occupied harbor for my first mission? I took a few depth charges on the way in, but did make it there with only 15 hull damage. Was able to fix all damage before arriving (I got hit with charges around 100nm out from the harbor). I'll have to look at the Sumsim forums because for some reason, I was only able to take 2 pictures....one was of a pontoon plane, and the other was of a ship docked (from too far away, apparently). I then proceeded to coast around right up to the docked boat...I can see people walking around on the docks, see people on the boat...try to snap a shot and scoot and nothing. I did enjoy putting point blank 5" rounds into their docked ship though before quitting the mission :) Very very cool game, if anyone ever wants to give co-op a shot, lemme know!

During the photo recon mission I couldnt resist setting up an attack, orders be darned. I always set off a few noise makers and fire all of my electric torpedoes on the slow setting. While the torps ran hot I would manuever hard for a minute or so before going all stop. After that I would set it on the bottom and wait 4-5 hours to leave the harbor. Best time was around dusk to fire because in some locations they can see your shadow from the surface. Never did get sunk like that....took a few depth charges on more than one occassion however. Managed to sink a few battleships every now and then too....those suckers soaked up some torpedoes. Even with magnetic fusing at the right depth it usually takes 4-5 concentrated torpedoes (more if you spread them).

for SH4 search for the trigger maru mod. you can add any part of it manualy yourself once you work out which files do what. New textures and terrain set up are a must. The trigger maru campaign is a worthy upgrade also, reducing air attacks in general and creating dynamic objectives that have a listed criteria instead of vague orders that seem to never be completed.

Am I the only one that thinks the crew management side of SH is a PITA without really adding very much?

lol... no, you're not the only one. It's completely artificial "busy work" making it seem like the game has more "features" than it does. SH4 handled this aspect much better... or did German crews actually wait for the Captain to tell them when their shift was over?

Nef, are there Mod settings that will make you NOT get "New message received..." notices every 2 minutes? Messages that have nothing to do with you but go on and on about some other sub in some undisclosed location, or so far away it has no bearing on you. Getting those messages always knocks it out of accelerated time with no benefit whatsoever.

Except for those, it's still a great game. Thanks for the heads-up on GWX. :aok

I'm not sure... I'm going into March 1940 and the messages have greatly decreased.

Check out subsim.com and search the forums. There may be a way to make it not stop time but continue to get messages.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

Another way around the radio messages is to simply move the radio operator out of the radio room.  If no one is manning the radio set you will not get any radio messages.

With Sub Commander you can tweak the time compression levels/events.
