SHIII with GWX 3.0
« on: June 15, 2009, 02:26:02 PM »
So I'm underway on Patrol 3. December 6, 1939.

I find a convoy South East of Rockall Bank and proceeded to attack. Near Dawn I sink a a South Hampton Light Cruiser that was tucked away in the heart of the convoy. 3 of 4 Eels hit and sink the 10000T Cruiser from 600m. I then sink a light freighter with my Stern tube a few seconds later. I reload tube 1 and as it finishes up I target a large 6000T merchant. I keep checking for the Black Swan Frigate that was leading the convoy and just like movies I turn my periscope a little more and there it is bearing down on me. I crash dived away barely avoiding the Frigate, Depth Charges explode all around.

I manage to sneak away after about an hour of attacks, but not before my Port Propeller is destroyed. I can not recharge my batteries without sitting on the surface dead in the water but I manage to recharge them. I make my way NNE at a max of 14 knots to try and catch the slow moving convoy again. So I save the game and load it up again last evening. After two days of sailing at accelerated time, I make contact with the convoy again, this time its Mid afternoon, skies were clear and the sea was like a mirror.

Off in the distance I see a J class destroyer, I also see the smoke from the convoy ships. I turned towards the ships but I must of gotten too close. 5 inch shells explode in the water all around me, and I Crash Dive. My attack is botched and I dive to 180m, just a few meters from the sea floor.

I was attacked by 2 J Class Destroyers for nearly 5 real life hours. 5 hours pales in comparison to real life attacks on uboats in WW2, but I was really exhausted afterwords. The explosions and damage caused me to collide with sea floor. I had severe flooding in my Stern Torpedo Room and both my deck and flak gun were destroyed in the attack. All my sailors are exhausted and
I had to do some crazy crew management to limp out of there at 1 kt.

I started playing at 5pm real time, and finally was able to surface and save my game just past Midnight. I'm debating whether I should go home or continue the hunt as banged up as I am.

What a great game, it surely has matured since it first came out years ago.

SHIII definitely one of the best, even better than SHIV. Didn't try GWX mod yet. I keep going back to this game once in a while.

I know people like to say "it's a whole new game" when a patch or expansion comes out. But this took SHIII and made it the premier WW2 Sub Sim ever made.

Just a month ago I pulled Das Boot "the directors cut" out of the DVD stockpile and watched it for the first time in quite a few years.  I was so stoked by the movie that same night I went and bought SHIII via digital DL from UbiSoft (which had it on sale for $9.99).  I love it.  A few days after that I DL'd GWX 3.0 and have not looked back.

Fantastic virtual submersion (pun intended).  I will say this: Stay the hell away from warships and stick with merchant shipping.  If you get several destroyers on your scent, especially in shallow water, the mission becomes pure hell.

Haven't tried the GWX mod. either but just might do so.  So out of idle curiosity: is firing a few shells at a Black Swan now a bad idea?  I used to loive to pummel the snot out of the enemy escorts at range and then move in on the convoy.  I also had a tendancy to hold the torps for the big, really big, really-really big  & tankers.  Ran-up some really-really-really unrealisitc "tonnage sunk" numbers.  SHiv just compounded my prediliction for shooting only the big-uns.  My crews were so frazzled from those long patrols; although once we were only out for nine days; ran into IJN BB/CV groups 1 after another....guess what we torped?

I still play Silent Hunter 3 and now im on a war patrol in Silent Hunter 4. Just attacked a jap convoy, now all torpedos expended, what do i run into, a Jap battleship with 3 escorts. crazy huh. all well. In your case, with the damage thats to your sub, I would return to port for repairs, your too badly damaged for anything more.

Good luck, I don't see that happening.

I'm playing SH4 and I really like it. I use some parts of the Trigger Maru mod which is well worth it. The most important thing being the graphical upgrade and decreased air activity.
I play on 100% realism and try not to save and re-load. If I miss then I miss, if I die then I start again. It's difficult to stick to, I have given in and re-loaded just last night after being sunk by a pair of dive bombers on my way back to pearl harbour. The immersion is top quality. I'm thinking of buying SH3 (only played SH1 and SH4 so far) to see what all the fuss is about.
And I don't know much, but I do know this. With a golden heart comes a rebel fist.

There is also an interesting mod that allows you to play a German torpedo boat.

Looks like I need to load that game back up.   Are there any good tutorials online someplace?  I've probably forgotten everything I had learned on navigation and plotting a torpedo attack.

First download GWX 3.0, the manual included with the 1 Gig Expansion pack should help you out.

Excuse the dumb question, but what is GWX and what does it do?
