Warbirds Aircraft Duels
« on: June 21, 2009, 11:44:10 PM »
The proprietor of one of the Internet's most interesting firearms sites also is a WWII enthusiast.  He has written a long article, The Pilot's Flying Guide to WWI and WWII Aircraft, based on his experiences flying various Warbirds aircraft against Warbirds artificial intelligence opponents.

He was unaware of Aces High until I told him about it and filled in a little of the background as I've understood it over the years, e.g., Aces High being the "high tech" (in every sense of the word) successor to Warbirds.  He added some references to Aces High in his article but remains focused on Warbirds duels with AI opponents.

I've downloaded a free copy now and then of Warbirds but haven't been able to replicate his drone experience,  maybe because I've haven't bought the latest version.  Aces High doesn't seem to have retained that offline feature, so I gather consensus is such duels are interesting but basically a nice to have feature that soon is surpassed by the much greater fun of on-line live opponents.

Hence the main question becomes the validity of aircraft merit conclusions from such offline dueling comparisons.  What is your take on the value of his article and such dueling with AI opponents?  Check it out at:

I wasn't on Warbirds long but I'm not sure his reviews accurately match up in AH.

I've both WB and AH. AH is far superior to WB. WB was a ghost town last time I was there. 50 people on at 8:00pm? Total.

Ya WB stopped spending money and time on the game a few years ago, and it shows. Checked the forums. Sad. Squads vertually disappearing or having just a couple of members.

I dunno, his rating of the S.E.5a as a novice plane made me doubt his credibility. The S.E.5a that I know (from Red Baron 3D) can get a really bad stall if you try to hammerhead from too slow on the zoom. If you get it under 80mph, you get another stall, based on which side of the wing is pointed to the ground, other than that, its snappy when above 80. Also, his rating of the Yak as a "C" craft makes me wonder, WTH is he smoking? The Yak can accelerate far better than most craft you see in the main arenas. Plus, he was fighting against "Artificially Intelegent" opponents, with far less unpredictability than the regular human cartoon pilot has. I feel that the fact that he only was fighting against computers renders his ratings and most of his guide null and void.
