Range Indicators For Strategic and Tactical Targets
« on: June 18, 2009, 08:31:42 AM »
Ok... we can see how far another aircraft or GV is from us... Level bombers can calibrate their bombsight and hit with fairly good accuracy.  Why not have an option to toggle range indicators for hangars, buildings, and the like.  No... it shouldnt be on all the time... WAY too much clutter on the screen.  But if you are trying to find range on a building, you should have SOMETHING that you can use to give at least an estimate.

Or.... how about being able to center the sight on the target, and hitting a key to give range at THAT MOMENT for just what is in the center of the sight?

Been doing a lot of work with ranging for the B25H lately, and it would make life a lot simpler.  You would still have to make an accurate shot on your own, but at least we could get an estimated range to target.

This would help GV'ers, 25H drivers, and glide bombers.

In other words, you are asking for a laser rangefinder.

No thank you. Wrong era.

LOL.  So much for learning how to do things the old fashioned way...    :lol

Keep practicing with whatever aircraft you want to be specific with, it takes time to learn and a bit of talent.  Just a small bit, though.   ;)

LOL.... not exactly... but if we have "laser range finders" for aircraft and GV's... it just seems odd that we dont have a built in means to find range for a fixed target.  I am sure some people fly with icons off, but I dont know of any yet.

I have no problem with doing the work to get good range references for ships and buildings, been doing it for about 2 weeks now and I will keep doing it.  But dont ya find it just a little odd that I can tell how far away the tiny little PT boat is, but not the HUGE carrier?

I probably wouldnt have even thought of this, if I hadnt been working on ranging to begin with... but it occurred to me "Hey... I can tell how far away that tiny tank is, but not the building."

Oh well... back to my compass, astrolabe, and sextant  :O

Icons for planes are there because planes become a dot at ranges that, in real life, should easily be identified as a plane (and often plane type) and easily determinable which way it's flying and how fast it is moving towards or away from you. While those skills certainly varied from pilot to pilot, the icon system gives a rough approximation of the pilot's tacit knowledge of the situation. Buildings, OTOH, don't move, are visible from far enough away to do anything you need to do, and you can learn to estimate proper range with experience, just like in real life.
