Vehicle functionality and survivability
« on: February 22, 2000, 04:53:00 AM »
Several questions come to mind when I think oncoming vehicles, halftracks and tanks:

-Are they multiplayer ie. can several players be in same vehicle?

-What crew positions are modeled? Driver is obvious as is gunnner but there is also commander and radio operator/bow gunner which migh be interesting positions. Of course there is also loader but it might be bit dull.

-How authentic are the sights and gun ballistics? Hopefully they are no arcade style but really require some skill to estimate range and lead on moving targets!

There is also issue about tank of halftrack survivability on battlefield. Halftracs are pretty easy to destroy with even heavy MG's, due their open tops and light armouring. Tanks, however are much more difficult. Top armour will easily withstand even heavy MG rounds unless they hit in nearly 90 degree angle. Some tanks had top armour that was impossible to penetrate even with 30 mm fast velocity guns, for example Tiger I had top armour of 40 mm.

Only way to kill tanks are then bombs and rockets. Bombs will propably kill with direct hit and maybe toss the tank upside down in near miss. Bombs are however hard to aim on moving target even if there is no enemy fighters around. Rockets kill only on direct hits and they are only marginally easier to aim. If tank commander sees incoming plane, he can instruct driver to do evasives and this makes hitting much harder.

I can't tell you how much I wait to be PzKw IV crew member!

Watch out for Russian 37mm carrying planes though: the NS-37 can penetrate 40mm of armour at angles up to 40º.

actually, sounds like its time for the P-39/P-63, airacobra or king cobra... Lousy fighter, but one of the best ground attack fighters of the war.  And russians used alot of em

Yep any of the russian "T Series" would be very nice for ground attack. Most of these could be armed with either the 37mm, 45mm, or even a 57mm cannon.  All of which were far superior to the American 37mm.

Of coure I would much rather see a VVS late war fighter (Yak-9U,Yak-3,La-7) before we go into VVS ground attack aircraft.

And I would LOVE to see the P-63 KingCobra!!

But I would disagree on it being a poor fighter, the P-39 yes, but the P-63 has performance easily on par with the P-51D.  Slightly slower at some altitudes, much better turn rate, same high speed handling, and it has the BFG 37mm cannon   I will happily be a "CobraDweeb".
