Flight Mechanics, Aerodynamics - book recommendations?
« on: March 24, 2006, 07:52:03 AM »
After reading so much detailed stuff about planes here, my final conclusion is: it sounds like mindless drivel to me :) and I'm in dire need to close the wide gaps in my knowledge about planes.

Widewing mentioned this book:
Aerodynamics, Aeronautics, and Flight Mechanics by Barnes W. McCormick
It looks almost exactly like the stuff i want - except for the fact that it's still only mindless drivel for me and i'm lost shortly after the table of contents :huh .

The book looks like a good reference when you actually know what you're looking for but its pretty sad when it comes to teaching stuff.
Has anyone recommendations for books which are a good starting point? I'm not afraid of maths and I think i could dig myself through the mentioned book but it really doesnt make it a time-efficient endeavor, nor a pleasant read.

every input is welcome :)

I may sound simple, but the internet is a great resource. I would google "flight mechanics" and "aerodynamics" and see what comes up. I have found lots of stuff for other subjects out there.

Great starter.

The Illustrated guide to Aerodynamics
Author H.C. "Skip" Smith.

Best I have seen for all the basics.

And for the ground stuff.

Fundamentals of Vehicle Dynamics.
Thomas D. Gillespie.

HT... did your interest in aviation develop from creating a game, or did your interest in aviation inspire you to create the game?
I am not ashamed to confess that I am ignorant of what I do not know.

Hi Leitwolf,

>Has anyone recommendations for books which are a good starting point?

As an easy-to-understand, fun-to-read book, I'd recommend A. C. Kermode's "Mechanics of Flight". At least, the German edition is pretty nice, and you enjoy the additional advantage that there will be fewer translation errors in the original English version ;-)

Principles of flight (JAR FCL - ATPL), ISBN 91-973123-1-2

Have that one on my nighttable. Basically a teaching book for professional pilots. It's ok ;)
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)
