Returning player needs refresher
« on: June 04, 2009, 06:54:39 AM »
Hello,

after a very long break of a few years i found my way back to AH two month ago. Most rust is shacken of so far, but I still could need some additional help. I would appreciate it if a trainer or some other skillful pilot could fly a few rounds with me in the TA or DA to examine were I stand and were I need to improve. My preferred and almost exclusive ride is the Dora 9, so the goal is to see if I fly that bird properly.

Additionally there a two things were I already know that I need some help.

1. The Merge. My timing on the merge is horrible, don’t know why, but I have the feeling that the average pilot skill has increased and what worked well for me in the past, does no longer work well now. So I need some fresh input on how to set up the merge properly.

2. Gunnery. Especially in the Dora 9 my gunnery sucks. It seems that I am just not able to get a feeling for the MG151/20 in it. I get myself into lots of troubles, because I fly to excellent “hispano firing solutions”. I noticed this when just for fun I flew the tiffie and was surprised that my gunnery suddenly was on the exactly on spot and I rarely need more than 1 firing opportunity. But sadly those guns are not available for the Dora, so I would be glad on some input where and how I can improve my MG151/20 feeling.

Regards

Naudet

Welcome back Naudet!

1. If you can't find anyone, let me know 1-2 days ahead of time and we can go work on that merge.

2. Practice. There's no replacement for trigger time.  Go to the TA or DA (much better in the TA since lethality is 0) and find someone you can fire at will on.  Fire anytime it feels right, don't hesitate or second guess yourself.  Fire and move on to the next shot.  Keep doing this till it all works like well-oiled machinery.

1.  In short, merge below and to the side of the enemy.  Get him to nose down at you and tilted and firing.  If you get shot, you weren't far enough away from him below/laterally.  You also want to be slightly slower on the merge also, and that varies depending on the matchup.  Once you get the feel for it, you'll know how fast you want to be in certain situations based on what plane you are merging against/how fast he is/how steep did you get his nose down on the merge.. etc

2.  Gunnery in the D9, to put simple enough.. You can't lead enough!  I'm guessing you are missing all your shots as they fall down and behind the enemy.  Get the lead as far out there as you can see.

I'd be willing to let you try to chase me around for a while in the TA or DA if it will help you out.  I'm no teacher or trainer but I fly 190's quite a bit (although the D9 least often).  I'm usually on after 9:00 PM central most evenings.  PM me if you want.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

Thanks for the offer BaldEagl, but at the moment i got everything fine.

Big thanks to moot who spent a few hours in the TA with me. He even managed to teach me a trick i didn't know, which i now use to good results in the MA.

Gunnery is decent now, after i decided to use double the deflection i used to.
