Having read combatsim.com's review of AH...When's the Lancaster comming? I Want it, I want it, I want it...

And what MK will it be? The MK1 or MK3. I highly doubt the MK2 as that was a bit of a rare one with Bristol Radial engines if I remember correctly.

IIRC PYRO said it would have .50's in the turrets to give it better defensive firepower.

So, I guess it will be a late model MkIII.

The MkIII had Packard Merlin engines of 1640hp, which by 1943 featured paddle-blade props that improved takeoff and climb performance.

In 1944 the new, roomier "Rose" rear turret with two .50 calibre guns was introduced.

50 late production MkIII's were also fitted with a Martin dorsal turret with two .50's.

The Lancaster should be quite effective in AH I think, especially if it has options for the 4,000lb, 8,000lb or 12,000lb "Cookie" bombs, and also the 12,000lb "Tallboy" deep-penetration bomb.

Of course with the Tallboy, it wouldn't be too much trouble for a single Lancaster to take out the HQ...

The only problem with the Lanc's was that there was very little room in the turrets LOL. My grandfathers buddy who used to be a tail gunner in a lanc. He is now bigger than the whole turret and he's only 5'7

Ahhh... and lets not forget that the Lancaster had a Service Ceiling of about 24,000ft.

Quite Vulnerable

Only 24,000 feet with 4 Spit engines?  Those liquid-cooled inline engines should have given it very good hi-alt performance.

Lancaster = NIGHT = to hide in.
Great aircraft but forget it in the daytime without massive escort in the AH skies.

Bring it on, it will take the heat off the B17s.

24,000 was indeed the approximate ceiling, and they will suffer heavily here. OTOH I think they (along with the He111, PE2, and SM79) are an absolute must. And think of this, only one Lanc has to get through to poke your lights out.

One thing to remember guys, all those "super bombs" you guys keep referring too (8,000lbers and up), were mostly used in specially fitted Lancasters for special missions and purposes.

The average Lancaster didn't carry those loads, so I would be suprised if they are modeled in AH, or allowed in the arena for playbalance reasons.

Plus when you carry such heavy loads, its performance is gonna suffer even more. Its all a matter of tradeoffs.

Just my opinon, I could easily be wrong.

Does this mean HTC is going to add Damns so we can fly damnbusters and watch the bomb skip across the water, then flood out 3 nme bases when the damn breaks? ;-)

You have to admit, it would be cool. Along with making a nighttime sky. Just make a bright moon per Janes WW2F. and then add some Ju-88s (He-219 would make it too easy ;-) with ShrageMuzak to hunt those lancs with.

The common load for RAF bombers was a 4,000lb cookie and a dozen or more incendiary cases. Even the Mosquito could haul a single cookie in it's bomb bay. Since the Lancaster could haul up to 22,000lbs of bombs, I don't think a 12,000lb Tallboy in the bay is going to slow it down that much.

Only the 22,000lb "Grand Slam" and B.N. Wallis' infamous "bouncing bomb" required a special Lancaster to carry them.

Juzz is right. The 8000lb 2xcookie was a common load and the 12000 3xcookie was not that rare. IIRC, about 900 12000lb Tallboys were dropped from standard Lancs.
The standard load for operations over Germany was up to 14000lb. That allowed a range of approx 1500 miles.
The 22000lb bomb required extensive  modifications, including removal of the bomb bay doors.
The Lancaster I'd like to see is the very rare MK VI, which had two-stage supercharged Merlins and a top speed of 345mph. Don't know what it's ceiling was, but only 9 were built. If the RAF had been forced into day bombing, they would almost certainly have used either MK VIs or IVs, which was developed into the Lincoln.

Happend to meet a Lanc pilot in the hot tub on the weekend. Talked till we were quite cooked.
He is a facinating man. Many such men never grew old.
Salute them all.
