Ridley Scott

This guy is just an amazing director.

He had the ultimate Hat Trick back in the day with "The Duelist" "Alien" and "Blade Runner." But he just keeps coming, stays relevant. Sure some of his movies don't work for me (I thought Hannibal was terrible), but none the less the bulk of his work is just off the charts.

I've watched it approximately 8 billion times, and have now decided that "Blackhawk Down" is the best military movie ever made. I know that tons of folks will point to Kubrick's Paths of Glory and Full Metal Jacket, or any number of very good movies, but to me, Blackhawk Down was a great movie that gets better every time I watch it, and I've been watching it a lot lol.

I dig Tony Scott too, and for general Popcorn flicks, he's one of my first choices. But overall, Ridley Scott is one of the best in the business today. Anyone who bags on Hollywood should probably spend a few more hours with Mr. Scott.

You forgot to mention "White Squall." Great flick, imho.

On the other hand, you also skipped over "Hannibal." That was a steaming bucket of crap with the handles on the inside.


As for Tony, I think his best was "Man on Fire."

really enjoyed Kingdom of Heaven too, and Gladiator of course.

cant believe Hannibal was his, should have been directed by Alan Smithee (Michael Mann did the best Lecter movie anyway)

Wish the studios hadn't gotten in his way and told him what kind of movie to make on that one (they wanted him to make it the next Lord of the Rings, rather than the poignant historical drama and examination of faith during the Crusades that Scott was going for. Keeping closer to the historical Balian--who Liam Neeson should REALLY have been playing--might have helped as well). The extended Director's Cut was SO much better and is the one that should have been released.

No, I mentioned Hannibal. I swear I'm shocked every time I remember that he had anything to do with it.

I'm nervous about this Robin Hood/Sheriff of Nottingham movie that he's doing. I'll spend the money and I'm sure I'll enjoy it, but I have reservations because he's taking on something that's been SO done, SO many times.

As for Tony, I absolutely loved Man on Fire, but don't know that I liked it more than True Romance, The Last Boy Scout (which I admit I haven't seen since I was in High School), Crimson Tide or Spy Game. I guess we're just lucky to have so many to choose from

Now I'm torn as to which to watch today; Spy Game, or Kingdom of Heaven.

Doh... I must've glazed over on the Hannibal part. As for Man on Fire or True Romance... completely different movies, mainly because the latter was written by Tarentino, IIRC.

You we're in the Navy. I had trouble with the whole Crimson Tide civil war on a boat thing. Too implausible.
