Screen freezing up on me
« on: July 05, 2009, 12:02:54 AM »
It's a new problem and I haven't changed anything on the computer for some time.  Not blaming but I started getting these about the same time I DLed Beta...also getting low FPS in regular AH after DL of beta.  I did a virus scan...found one took care of it and still the problem is there.  DxDiag:

What does the "CPU Usage" in the Windows Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del, Processes tab) look like when there is nothing running?  It should be at 0.

These symptoms have nothing to do with the Beta.  If you really want to believe it, then turn off the computer and turn it back on.  If the Beta was leaving anything at all behind, that will clear it.

Skuzzy do you ever sleep?  It bounces from 1% to 0% but mainly stays at 0.  Well I have to shut the computer down and reboot when it freezes.  I run about 25 processes when playing the game.

If you are having to shut down the computer when it "freezes", then something else is at work causing the problems.  Could be heat related.

Then again, if your computer had a virus, all bets are off.  Do you know which virus it was?  Most, if not all, viruses replace system files with other files to allow outside hooks into your computer so worms may call on your computer to do things, such as deliver mass amounts of virus-ladened spam.

Trojan-Downloader.Win32.FraudLoad.vvil

this is the bug I have found...delete it and it comes back.

Path name: c:\system volume information\restore{106CF321-99A3-4E3A-9103-1BDO27606A99}|RP289|A0054809.dll

I can't find the little bastard.  If I try to remove it with the virus protection it just changes it location.

Until you get rid of that virus, all bets are off.  It could be damaging system files.

Nailing malicious software is like a boxing-match. You don't knock out your opponent striking in the same area using the same move. Download the following utilities to finish the bug:

(Not free, but might give you some ideas) PCTools Spyware Doctor w. AntiVirus:
http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor-antivirus/

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:
http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&tag=button

Spybot Search & Destroy:
http://download.cnet.com/Spybot-Search-amp-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html?tag=mncol
(When installing, de-select the option to install, "TeaTimer.exe.")

AVG Anti-Rootkit Free:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/AVG-Anti-Rootkit.shtml

Make sure to update all of the utilities after you've downloaded them (AVG Anti-Rootkit Free can't be updated). That way scanners will be more likely to find whatever is causing your bug to reappear.
