Skins: 143 Wing RCAF 'Bomb-phoons'
« on: July 08, 2009, 01:10:47 PM »
Here are the three RCAF Tiffies I had planned on doing, Thought I'd get an objective look before sending them to HTC.

First up is "Nicky", Typhoon Ib RB281, coded 5V-X of No. 439 (City of Westmount) Sqn RCAF, Eindhoven (Airfield B.78), Netherlands, February 1945.  Flown by F/O Hugh Fraser of Montreal, Quebec.

Fraser shot down 3 enemy aircraft while flying 'Nicky', 2 Fw190s and a Me-262, the jet victory being indicated by a german cross in red.

Next is "Pulverizer IV", Typhoon Ib RB389, coded I8-P of No. 440 (City of Ottawa) Sqn RCAF, spring 1945.  Flown by F/L. Harry James Hardy, D.F.C., of Virden, Manitoba.

Lastly, Typhoon Ib MP131, coded F3-J of No. 438 Sqn (Wildcats) RCAF, summer 1944.  Flown by F/O Norm Dawber, D.F.C., of Toronto, Ontario.  The Wildcat nose art was created for the squadron by the Disney corporation.

Too bad the beta doesn't allow outside skins yet or I'd have gotten some pics of these birds loaded for bear.  A couple of thousand pounders under the wings would make the pics look more business like  :)  RCAF Typhoons carried bombs and anti-personnel bombs against such targets as armour, bridges, enemy convoys and troop concentrations.  Few RCAF Tiffies, if any, carried rocket projectiles and therefore were nicknamed 'Bomb-Phoons' vs the RAF's 'Rock-Phoons'.

I think the bolts/rivets stand out a little too much, but that's just personal opinion. The skins overall look pretty good (as does the new typhie!).

Any chance of doing one from No 56 Squadron? Maybe Jock Dundas' Farquhar IV?  :D

Too true. There's a couple of things I want to tweak anyway, is a skin ever really done?  ;)

I am looking at redoing one of my B-17s from 2+ years ago.. so no they never are.

McCudden: Being a Canuck I wanted to do the above skins as a representation of each of the 3 squadrons in 143 Wing, the sole Canadian Typhoon Wing. While I'm certainly interested in doing Cocky Dundas's aircraft I'll probably wait to see what other skinners will do first so we all get a kick at the can with this lovely new model. Also, Farquhar IV was an early Typhoon with the car door style hood, and was actually a Mk IA which means it didn't have cannon armament, but rather 12 (yes, TWELVE) .303s! Will have to see if HTC would allow that skin on this later model. It's kind of like putting a Spit IX skin on a Spit Ia.

My pardon, That will teach me to type from memory.

I asked Pyro about skins of car door style Typhoons and he said they would be allowed. Not sure about the Mk Ia, I can't see it being an issue but it might be worth checking.

Well, that opens up a lot more possibilities for Tiffie skins  :)
