Drivable Destroyer
« on: August 26, 2001, 05:56:00 AM »
Hello all...

Maybe the fighter aces now brake out in a lough attack...  ;)

But I want a drivable destroyer for naval operations....

I mean you can use it for to protect your port and carrier group, but also make a amphibios landing and give air cover to your forces when go for shore....

Maybe I want this because Im a bad fighter pilot lol...

But anyway, some of you also would like to be a destroyer captain???

Cheers

S!

I agree.  A destroyer that you can maneuver independently is manageable by one person.  A Cruiser or a Battleship really isn't, and these types of Capital ships were always accompanied by other vessels.

Destroyers were used for close support in invasions, for hunting small convoys, and escorting the same.

The German navy kept most of its big vessels in port throughout the war, but its destroyers were operating in the English Channel as late as the summer of 1944.

There were many clashes between Allied destroyers and German ones.

I think the existing Task Force can be modified fairly easily to create Battleship Task Forces, and Cruiser Task Forces.  They should operate in much the same way as the existing TF's.

If AH ever gets Subs, then you could have the Destroyer vs Sub duel.

Although in my opinion, a Sub will be very difficult to simulate, and I doubt it would be popular.   Just takes too long to get anywhere, and would likely spend most of its time sitting and waiting for a target to come along so it can ambush it.  The Subs are too slow to catch anything.  Perhaps they can be spawned at sea, near Convoy routes.

Perhaps something a little smaller than a destroyer, like a Corvette.
Might be more suitable for convoy escorts or something similar.

I'd agree that Subs would be very difficult to game.
