German 88's
« on: July 27, 2009, 04:43:11 PM »
I know I have made this wish before, but we need German 88's for base defense.  Stop both the vulching and low level bombers.  In addtion, would be very useful against enemy GV's

If there's any weapon shrouded with misconceptions and myth in the Aces High community, it's the 88.

We already have much better weapons to stop vulchers. 37mm manned guns, Ostwind and Wirbelwind with it's 4x20mm guns. That were the preferred weapons of choice against low level attacks in real life. Why? Because a heavy 88 is no point & shoot gun. It simply cant aim fast enough to effectively engage close range, low level attackers. Mind it, often 88 batteries were defended by a few light ack guns for this very reasons.
And also almost everybody forgets that 88's had no proximity fused shells. There were timed fuses. You tried to determine range to your target (by radar or by stereoscopic rangefinder or (rarely) even by sound, and then set the fuse accordingly when loading it into the gun.
All that makes such a weapon a bad choice for that kind of work. 88's were used for engaging planes at medium and high altitudes and worked best against formations.

Oh, and in real life you couldn't simply switch from anti-air to anti-tank mode at will. You had to change the setup of the weapon and switch sighting equipment, which was actually not a quick process.

88 was for hi alt targets and would be good for high flying buffs above the bases. For fighters not so good.

There used to be 88mm guns at bases and towns. They were removed a while back and now are only at factories.
Once known as ''TrueKill''.
