TrackIR and Rudder Pedals just added to system
« on: July 30, 2009, 08:38:12 PM »
Added both to my SaitekX52 setup.  No more twisty stick.

Trying to use ruder pedals and the TrackIR and learning both at the same time, my SA has dropped through the floor and i cant hit the broad side of a barn.

And the TrackIR is horrible in the gunner position in Tanks.

Anyone else have a steep learning curve with the TrackIR?

And I got so used to TM Pedals years ago I fell in love with the toe movements, now these days its actual rudder inputs that require leg movement.. what a PITA.

I like the TrackIR profile I got off of this site somewhere, but the distraction of keeping your head still when pulling up on their six... and then twisting the stick to bring the cross hairs over.. and then hitting the pedals on the toes... then finally remembering I have to shove my leg into it....

Unf......

Just disable TrackIR while tanking. The gunsights are no reflecting ones, so they don't work when you are moving your head around. The only time I do (rarely) activate TIR in a tank is when dancing the bomb waltz in a Tiger from the commander's position.

Turn off your track IR for a bit & get the hang of the pedals first that will take a little while before you are comfortable with them. Then start with The IR system that is going to take a little bit longer to get in the swing of.

Is there a kill switch for the TrackIR in the key setup, or will I have to Alt Tab out and simply close the program?

Also I noticed there are several profiles outside of the one I downloaded from here (which works great for checking your 6 over the seat), but one is called "Precision".

My point being, is that picking up icons clearly is more difficult now, as if I cant get my head to sit still long enough to make out if its a IL2 or an I16, much less a F4U or an F4F.

But yes, I will probably drop the IR for a bit and settle in with the pedals, I have the CHPro and the Saitek at the moment, testing each one to see which I like better before sending one back.  The CH ones sit closer together, which ergonomically with my desk works better.

I just cant get past wanting to push the toe down like with the old Thrust Masters from years ago, having to move your entire leg to slide a pedal forward is awkward, especially for precision movements.

Steep learning curve with both.

Stick with it - youll never go back.

EDIT:  Some tips:

1.  I prefer a slight deviation on the "smooth" default setting provided by the latest software.
2.  When in plane, be sure to do the following: First, center the view in a comfortable position.  Second, move your head forward and down - then hold and recenter.  Following this, the return of your head to the original position will give you the great six views, etc, afforded by the F10 saves.
3.  A powered USB will smooth all inputs.

The default key to disable TIR is F9 (or F12...I can't remember).  If you downloaded a profile, it might have changed.  Before starting AH2, start TIR and click on the profile you're using.  You should see on the bottom of that window what the hotkeys are for disabling and centering the TIR.

To make it easy for me, my disable is Alt-~ and center is ~.  I find it easy to hit the tilde key (just to the left of the 1 key) from my throttle hand without looking.  As Lusche said, disable TIR while GV'ing - or at least while gunning in a GV.

As far as steadying your head while fine-tuning your 6-shot on the con...I just use my hat switch "forward" view.  That overrides the TIR input, but still allows you a little head movement.  I find it works well and you don't have to fumble for the TIR disable hotkey.

I feel for you with the change in pedals.

I just went from the old CH Pro Pedals (circa 1996), which operated like gas pedals, to the new USB Pro Pedals that slide, and I'm having a hell of a time getting used to them.

I've had the new pedals for two days and I've gone into more spins-into-augers than I want to remember...

Reading the Manual now, should go a long way in helping me work out some issues.

You can map a button on the stick to enable/disable the tracking in the game for your GV activity.

Learning curve?   Not so much- adjustment is more the word to look for.

You'll find yourself adjusting it quite a bit- my advice is to go to the TA to get used to it, and configure it.  It's done WONDERS for me, personally.

When doing fighters, I recommend a center view command mapped to a joystick key. This will allow for those last minute adjustments. You could also have it center and disable TIR.

I would recommend the "hard way" and do without any hat views in fighters. That's just slowing you down in getting used to it.
Tweak the settings - start with an aggressive profile, then adjust deadband and the inner part of the curves until you can get a steady view when looking forward through your gunsight but still be able to move your views very quickly. I only use the recenter button, I never disable or lock my TIR in a fighter at all.
For best 6 view, lean forward and recenter. That way your head will already have maximum distance from headrest when looking back.
Use the offline drones. Do all sort of maneuvers around them, particularly slashing attacks, barrel rolls & yoyos. Try to keep your eyes on them, then adjust your TIR settings again & again. All in all, it took me about a week to get comfortable with TrackIr.

Was going to suggest this very thing. Old habits die hard and it takes a while for the new "muscle memory" to develop. So one new device at a time might lead to lot lower frustration levels.
