Wing loading under max takeoff weights
« on: September 05, 2001, 03:05:00 AM »
I thought it would be amusing to look at wingloading on a max weight takeoff.  What relevance does this have? I don't know, but here my results are in decending order (keep in mind that these are max takeoff loadings not combat loadings):

B-29A Superfortress: 79.493 lbs/sq.ft.

Ar234 Blitz: 76.416 lbs/sq.ft.

He219A-7 Uhu: 70.418 lbs/sq.ft.

Me410A-1 Hornisse: 63.568 lbs/sq.ft.

P-38L Lightning: 63.110 lbs/sq.ft.

Me262A-1 Schwalbe: 60.279 lbs/sq.ft.

Fw190D-9: 54.168 lbs/sq.ft.

Bf110G-4 Zerstörer: 52.751 lbs/sq.ft.

Ju88A-4: 52.614 lbs/sq.ft.

Lancaster B.MkIII: 52.308 lbs/sq.ft.

P-51D Mustang: 50.644 lbs/sq.ft.

Mosquito FB.MkVI Series 2: 49.295 lbs/sq.ft.

P-47D25 Thunderbolt: 48.667 lbs/sq.ft.

P-40N Warhawk: 48.305 lbs/sq.ft.

Typhoon F.MkIb Series 1: 47.491 lbs/sq.ft.

B-17G Flying Fortress: 46.127 lbs/sq.ft.

Tempest F.MkV Series 2: 45.166 lbs/sq.ft.

Bf109G-6: 43.254 lbs/sq.ft.

F6F-5 Hellcat: 42.664 lbs/sq.ft.

Spitfire FR.MkXIVe: 40.049 lbs/sq.ft.

La-5FN: 39.120 lbs/sq.ft.

Ki84-Ia Hayate: 37.939 lbs/sq.ft.

D.520: 35.826 lbs/sq.ft.

C.202 Folgore: 35.685 lbs/sq.ft.

Ki-61-I-KAIc Hien: 35.535 lbs/sq.ft.

N1K2-J Shiden-Kai: 34.854 lbs/sq.ft.

Hurricane MkIIc: 31.178 lbs/sq.ft.

C-47A Skytrain: 29.686 lbs/sq.ft.

A6M5c Zero-Sen: 26.279 lbs/sq.ft.

Gladiator MkI: 14.706 lbs/sq.ft.

Swordfish MkI: 12.372 lbs/sq.ft.

BTW, Could somebody clarify for me how wingloading is used in flight calculations and what it means in terms of performance?

Thanks.

You could derive stall speeds and minimum turn radius from the wingloading.  It doesn't affect top speed much.  Comparing the wingloading of different planes doesn't really tell you much, since you also need the lift coefficient.  It's good for a general comparison, as long as you keep in mind that results could vary +/- 25% or so, everything considered.
