New Favorite Reality show!
« on: July 26, 2009, 12:39:10 AM »
Renovation Realities! I can sure understand this with all the work I have done to my home. Thank goodness I don't have the annoying little mrs. around. Poor bloke, his wife, you started earlier, you're not doing it right, you tell the guests they can't come and it went on. My lord, that man took constant abuse. In the end it wasn't finished and 7 weeks later it wasn't finished. He said the whole thing put a strain on their relationship. That's an understatement!  :lol

Like I said having done so much myself it's tough. My brother came up in earlier June and at times it didn't seem physically possible I could get this done and I started 3 month's before his arrival. Went to bed every night with sore muscles and the feeling I didn't get enough done.

I've gotten to the point where I find it hard to watch reality shows anymore simplyu because they now all seem to talk in the same tones and rhythms that you almost never hear IRL cept by small children.

I'm talking about those little breakaway segments where each person has something to say.
Impossible to translate into text form as it must be heard. But the best example of the sound Im talking about is the line from the movie "American Pie"
Notice their opening statement almost always sounds like ."And this one time, at band camp." then their next line will go down low and back and forth they go till my eyes want to roll over into the back of my head and I want to hit them with something and say "SPEAK NORMALLY."
I hung up on a customer once because he spoke like that and I just couldn't take it any longer. Told em my cell crapped out on me LOL
The next day when I saw him I said. "I bet you like reality shows."
"I do. Howd you know"
"Oh...just had that feeling."  ;)

I picked up my house for 10K less then other similar houses in the area because I knew how to do the work myself. But rather then do everything all at once I do one project a year as budget and time allows.  Windows, doors, all the floors save 1 floors, a good chunk of the plumbing, electrical, Remodeled both baths,Sidewalk, footings for my 12X20 workshop/shed, replacing my small 10X10 shed, Landscaping are all done by me or the family together which usually equates to mostly me. LOL
The only things I didnt do myself were actually building my 12X20 shed because average temps that summer were around 100 and putting it together came with the delivery.  And my roof which was done the same summer. And even then I helped out some.
In hindsight If I had to do it all over again I'd hire someone else ot dig the footing because if you dig more then 8 inches around here you hit solid shale. But thats a story in itself which I may have told here already

As for your house. Nothing like doing your own work provided you know how to do it correctly. You really get to make the house "yours".
You get your own sense of pride in being able to say you did it yourself.

I found out early on after buying my house (its 21yrs old) that you either become your own handyman and become adept at doing the work yourself for the monetary reasons and as dred posted the "pride" factor OR you got lots of money to waste
Crap now I gotta redo my cool sig.....crap!!! I cant remeber how to do it all !!!!!

My mom was so impressed with what I had done, She said " You've turned a house into a home." I did not want this house. I took it in a divorce to save my credit. My ex said she would let it go back to the bank. Well it turned out for the better that I got it. It's cheap living for sure. When I look back it seems the house needed me as well. I've put laminate flooring in the living room, sanded and stained my computer room floor and my guest bedroom floor, sanded and stained 5 doors. Painted every room except the kitchen, remodeled the garage and the bathroom. I'm just so proud of how everything turned out. The bathroom was sooooo bad that I had one contractor refuse to do it because it was such a health hazard. Oh it was a nightmare. Now it is nothing short of wow! Everyone who has seen it say OMG! It's beautiful. Only the kitchen remains to be done now and my bedroom floor. Those have to wait until I pass the CPA exam though. That's number one now.

Normally I don't like reality shows. I think you describe the reason very well. This one however I can sure identify with. How everything can go wrong. The annoying little injuries, things that don't fit, bad wood measurements and mostly how things take much longer than you think. The first one was where a guy was going to add a connecting hall way to the back of his house. He thought it would take a week. 3 months later it still isn't finished.  :lol This last one was a bit annoying. The guy wouldn't listen and he woman instead of helping kept telling him about things he had done wrong that weren't relevant to what was needed at the moment. How that guy took it so well is a lesson for us all.

Just watched an episode tonight. The guys wife was insisting on helping with the cutting of some plywood. She's at the table with the hand saw. Her big strapping husband looks at her and says, "are you going to cry?' You're crying!" She was so nervous and yet bound and determined to cut that wood. He then comforts her, "you know that is how was with me the first time I cut wood."  :rofl :rofl :rofl I bet he gets rewarded.  :D

At the end of the show they finish the kitchen remodeling. They then show her working on cabinets for the laundry room with the saw her hand. Then they flash across the screen, "She occasionally lets her husband help!"  :rofl :rofl

Best Reality Show is Hells Kitchen.  :aok  (uncensored)
Forgot who said this while trying to take a base, but the quote goes like this. "I cant help you with ack, Im not in attack mode" This is with only 2 ack up in the town while troops were there, waiting. The rest of the town was down.
