The options for Object Self Shadow and Smooth Shadow are not clickable for me... Anyone else?

Most likely your graphic card lacks the features necessary for that option.

From what I hear, that feature is a real frame-rate killer (even for some of our higher-end players).

If it is not available it is because the video card does not support a specific format needed to make the shadows functional.
