Can a fragmented (.res) file cause video problems?
« on: August 13, 2009, 02:00:21 PM »
Last night I was attacking V135 in a tiger. When I started taking concentrated tank fire the terrain and sun texturing changed to look like something out of Doom. The sun became the frozen frame from a round exploding into the ground. Much of the ground I was driving on turned black as though a Nuke had burnt it to a cinder. Stands of trees miles away turned into frozen flame hundreds of feet high. Closer trees remainded trees. The dials from my guages were superimposed across the landscape miles in diameter. As usual the clipboard and the map morphed into odd unuasable streached textures but, the spawn lines were glowing neon. I could still hear vox, and the main gun sight was still usable. I killed one tank after this happened. Then I drove back to my spawn point and towered.

This gets interesting. I closed the game and rebooted my PC. Launched AH and logged in. From the tower the feild was dominated by three 50ft high rotating kiosks whose rotating pages were my clipboard. I closed the game and ran a defrag analyse on the Aces High directory. The hirestex.res file was highly fragmented. Now with every patch update I have downloaded and reinstalled the HiRes pac. I did this with the latest patch ver 5. So I defragged the directory, deleted the Hires pac executable and downloaded a new one. I played for another two hours with no problems.

I defrag and optimise the files on my hard drive before I run the game as a rule. I've noticed after closing the game that the game flies tend to be more fragmented in this 214 version then in the previous 213 version. This may be only my computer and not the game process.

This is like the old joke that voters are harsher to their beer brewer if he has an outage, than their politicians after raising their taxes. Death and taxes are certain but, fun and sex is only now.

The problem used to lie in the cache being corrupted, but I'm not sure if that's even used any more. The old solution was to delete the cache folder.

In past years Ive only had to delete the cache folder once. But again I've had to do things like this years ago with other PC games like Doom, Decent, Quake and all those air simms from SWOTL through Yeager and on. Thankfully this happens only when I'm in a tank or firing guns on the carrier. It's curious but HiTech probably knows about it.
