Trouble installing patch 5
« on: August 13, 2009, 08:05:13 PM »
I manually downloaded patch 5 and tried to install.  I get this message:

Error: The file C:\Hitech Creations\Aces High\ACEHSHI~1\htdlg.res could not be opened.

Dono if this will help, but, DXDIAG Results: ... The whole file is 34K bytes.  If you really need it for this but, I'll post it on e-snips and give you a link, but I can't post it here with a 10K byte limit.  Here's the high level stuff:

It looks like the patch is pointing at the wrong directory, you should be able to run the patch again and manually point it to the proper directory for Aces High.

I am also having this problem and it points to the correct directory. Haven't tried to play yet so don't know if its an issue. But will let you know.

Thanks Hepcat, That's a good guess, but I think I've got the correct directory.
I'm using "C:\Hitech Creations\Aces High\"
The file "htdlg.res" is present there, 344KB, but it's not human readable content.
Perhaps it's corrupted.

When I went to open the game and connect it said i was out of date so I let it run the updater and it downloaded what appeared to be a very small file as it finished in record time. It then installed the update and everything went fine. I think after manually installing it and getting the error it just grabbed the file(s) it needed and finished.

No, the patch is only 786K bytes in size.  If you are manually trying to install the patch, what is the file name you are running to install the patch?

I still have AcesHigh 2.13.1 in its original location.
My clean install of AcesHigh 2.14 (AH2144.EXE) went in the new default location.
The patch I'm trying to run is AH2144TO2145.EXE (788 KB (807,768 bytes))

Just for kicks, I tried to reinstall the patch again this morning... and it completed successfully.

Best guess: Perhaps the first time I tried to install it yesterday I did something wrong, like pointing it toward the old default location, and subsequent attempts to install failed even though I used the new default location.  Anyway, the problem wasn't resolved until I re-booted.

Skuzzy, Should I just leave it alone now, or uninstall all of it and re-install fresh.

Should be fine.  However, you need to be careful.  The registry entry for the game will always point to the last instance of the game run.  So if you fire up 2.13, and then try to run a patch manually for 2.14, it will fail.

The best thing to do to prevent this from happening is to allow the auto-updater to do the patch for you.

Just a guess... Would running the installer with administrative rights/privileges fix the problem?

When I ran the installer using admin it still gave the error. The auto updater did it correctly. Try to use the auto.
