problems with os
« on: August 16, 2009, 07:19:34 PM »
I have a gateway 820 (gm5066e) computer.  I replaced the case and mb, now while trying to reinstall windows, its asking me for the product key.  I cant find the book that has the windows key.  any ideas on how to get product key  I had to reinstall windows several times before on old mb and it never asked me for the product key.  U guys think If i put the old computer back together and reinstall the os, will it ask for a key and if it doesnt where does it get stored so I can get it.  I tried ms but they kept transfering from one place to another and emails to gateway have not yet been answered.

The product key is usually on a sticker somewhere on the case.

Lacking that, you may be hosed.  Before I tear down a computer, if I can't locate the OS license key I will use a "keyfinder" type utility to dig the key out of the operating system, and write it down for the re-installation process.  If you didn't do that, you may be hosed.

Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

oh man eagl,  If you had been in front of me I would've kissed you :).  I just dug the old case out of the trash and sure enough the product key is in back of the computer.    :o :o :o.  thanks for your help.

here's a picture of my "new" computer.  Tempest case was from TD, delivered to my house in one day   :rock.  and no the face appearing on the rear fan was not added using any software.  cables are still messy, but its my first time. I still need to add another ps, it has a bfg 450w and a differed vc.  I still havent d/l ah but I am pretty sure it will do better than before wich at 40 to 50 fps wasnt bad at all.

Glad you found the key.  The only other way I could possibly think of to get another key without paying for it (and without committing a crime) would be to call the computer manufacturer and give them the serial number or the original purchase invoice number, and even then the computer manufacturer might just tell you tough luck.
