No uber planes........only UBER pilots......

Just for fun, and since I was wondering myself, I decided to check and see if the Spit, F4U-1C, and Niki are REALLY dominating the arena.
I only selected the top 10 ranked pilots from Tour 9.
I listed their kill total, and then weeded through their stats to see what most of them got the majority of their kills in.  Nothing definitive, but it WAS interesting to see how some of them flew mainly 2 or 3 planes, one (Citabria) flew ALL kinds of stuff.  Check for yourself, decide for yourself.  The bottom line is, get yourself in these cats' sights, no matter what they are in, and you are likely toast.

#7  Zona  448 kills, 131-31 in Typhoon, 196-45 in Pnzr, 67-31 in Osty
#8  cishpx  363 kills, 116-73 in Osty, 105-32 in Pnzr, 59-15 in Niki, 37-11 in Hog-C
#9  Hangtime  234 kills, 182-82 in P51D
#10  Ypsilon  264 kills, 124-11 in SpitIX, 77-9 in Pnzr, 22-8 in Osty

I listed their kill-deaths also just to see what it was like.  Citabria and sigemo and snefens flew a bunch of different stuff, while greebo flew the Tiffy about 90% of his sorties looks like.  
The real killers, the ones that shocked me?  All the Pnzr and Osty kills putting those other up in the top 10.  
No one has a right to tell the others how to play.  I just wanted to see what the top guys flew and how much they stuck to the same plane.  
Only 2 guys used the Spit9 for the majority of their kills, 2 used a Tiffy, 2 used a Hog-C (neither got more than 50% of their kills in it though), and one guy used an Osty to catapult himself into the top.  
Evaluate it for yourself, all it is is interesting reading......nothing more.

It's worth to note that not a single Russian or Italian plane is represented on that list and only a single spit. German vehicles are many (obviously  ).

First: A note about the stats: they check deaths only.  That is, if you bail, it doesn't count as being shot down. Since I have a desire to accurately know how I am doing, I simply auger in every time.

And snefens and Hangtime are the only who fly non Hispano equipped planes.

wingqck got these stats:

winqck has 188 kills and has been killed 9 times in the F4U-1C
winqck has 3 kills and has been killed 1 time in the Spitfire Mk IX.

The rest I see in kill buffer ever so often (except for wingqck who comes swooping down and clears my 6  ) but haven't had any memorable fights with
I checked because I've only seen him in the chog.

When I took the Spit up during a scenario, I got into a situation where I was outnumbered 1:6. Got 4 kills ad escaped. Then met Camo and his 109's. Got 1 kill, then had to land with burned out engine. Collapsed gear as I did (not being use to Spits, I just slammed it into the ground like I do my 109).

citabria is first of all the king of knowing when to and not engage. Then if it turns bad, he still has much better ACM/tactics than the average guy and can usually blast his way out of the situation leaving holed wrecks behind him.

Much the same with snefens and Hangtime. Back in tour 3 when I was relatively new, I met snefens. Had alt, and he killed me. That woke me up  .

Hangtime stings like a bee, and is like a mosquito. Irritatingly hard to get a shot at.

What I wouldn't give for a LW tiffie. *drool* Almost zero deflection shooting, faste than a bat outta hell, outturns an A5 except when slow.

So, I disagree with you only in 1 thing; I don't think the chog drivers would be as effective if they flew anything else. Thy'd be effective, still. OTOH, it'd be scary to see snefens, hang or citabria in a chog or tiffie  .

Hell, I have better stats than some of these guys, and I am just a medium pilot  .

So, to conclude, I'd still say that "the plane matters, and matters to a significant degree". Except if you're citabria, that f¤&¤ freak can kill you in anything.

That doesn't take away anything from the fact that these guys are bloody good sticks.

Yeah, show me who the top killer in a c.202 is, and where he fits in the list; then I'll believe that planes have nothing to do with it.
Remember too the 1.04 typhoon is not the 1.03 typhoon.

My apologies StSanta........you are correct.  winqck did have his 188 kills in the Hog-C.  I was tired when I did this, and for whatever reason, put him in a Spit9.  I am sorry for the error.
I thought the most interesting part was Cita's streaks of 61-0 and 42-0 in the Lightning and Mustang.......not sure what the P38's 20mm cannon is (Hispano??), but the Mustang is not cannon equipped at all.

Well, I don't know why he just picked out just those planes for me, but to make the list of planes I fly complete:

26-12 La-5FN
20-10 Yak-9U
13-15 Ju88
8-5 C.202

BTW I actually fly the Typhoon once in a while on low level strikes with my squad, but only in tour 7 (1.03) it made it too the stats. Also sometimes a 38 or 47 for a Jabo-run.

aper has 280 kills and has been killed 47 times in the La-5FN.
aper has 81 kills and has been killed 9 times in the Bf 109G-6
AKSWulfe has 114 kills and has been killed 29 times in the La-5FN.
duckwng6 has 145 kills and has been killed 21 times in the F4U-1D.
StSanta has 179 kills and has been killed 34 times in the Bf 109G-10.
duma has 132 kills and has been killed 56 times in the Typhoon IB.
zigrat has 69 kills and has been killed 36 times in the Bf 109G-10.
zigrat has 59 kills and has been killed 26 times in the Bf 109G-6.
zigrat has 34 kills and has been killed 7 times in the Bf 109G-2.

I picked these pilots with these stats because they are people I have flown with and I know what I can expect to see them flying.  If I thought about it a little more, I could come up with more variant pilots.

These are the people I respect in the arena.  I know its not the plane that makes them good.. its the pilot.  I find that the more these people are around me in combat.. the better I do.

But seriously I had fun and a challenge flying the G10 in the last 2 weeks of tour9, after dweebing it in chog and niki since 1.04 came out. Every kill I get in a 109 feels 10times better than a niki or chog kill. Some of the guys in here are freking amazing. Take Santa in 109, he just wont let u get a shot in - always moving about sideways and up/down, rolling like mad - damn u!   Same for Zigrat in one of those blasted commie yaks. How u guys manage to escape odds like I saw u in is beyone me. <S> To you fellas!

When I started AH, I thought I was a good pilot. First topur resulted in a K/D of .35, so I started to reconsider my status as "the greatest stick online".

Now, I know how many truly great pilots are out there - I cannot help to think what'd happen if we took these guys, placed them in an average WWII fighter jocks body and then let them loose as a squad.

One thing; the enemy wouldn't get a message saying "you've been killed by xxx of Aces High "Virtual Valeries""
There are many knights I am glad to have on MY side - and there are many bishrooks that I want to be kniggits  . The AK's are always to be found in the middle of the action, and now kniggits gotta fight zig's Wrecking Crew. funked and verm are up to mischief any time they're online and dejavu can be seen agitating the masses, prepping them for attack  .

In fact, there are only a handful of pilots I don't respect. Some, I exchange verbal abuse with, serious or not, but still respect. Others are the strong silent type, not responding to my whining when I am downed and pissed  .

Methinks the AH community is pretty damned great, even with the sometimes venomous arguments  . Always feels like home logging on.

Hm, AH vs WB scenario. Would be cool. It would take place in a game called Aces Birds.
