AMD Dual-core optimizer
« on: August 18, 2009, 12:38:11 PM »
I heard that the AMD Dual-Core Optimizer utility is no longer required with XP SP3.  Is this true?  The download from AMD is not longer available and I'm wondering if I can disable it from my startup (trying to trouble-shoot the stuttering issue with 2.14 patches 1-6).

Someone posted somewhere that the optimizer isn't required with the latest AH patch either...I saw that info within the last 24 hours (before I drank too much vodka)...since I don't use it I don't pay too much attention to it.

I'm sure Skuzzy, HiTech or Pyro can verify.

The link is still on the AMD website, it's just extremely difficult to locate. An optional download link can be found in the following thread:

Version 2.14 Patch 6 Changes
======================

Implemented a fix for AMD dual-core users that no longer requires the AMD dual core optimizer to be installed or the game to be run in Windows 98/ME compatibility mode.  If you are running the game in compatibility mode, we strongly suggest disabling that.

is not needed anymore, Skuzzy says it is not necessary to uninstall...you can if you want to though.......

but if you are running in the win98 compatibility mode, you need to switch it back / disable it so it runs correctly now under winXP or under Vista or under Windows 7........for those that might have been running it this way ( that is  using win98 compatibility mode )

hope this helps

Just a question. Does that mean AMD users who could only run the game on a single core can now utilize both cores? Or does the game automatically shut off one core (less likely based on an explanation from Skuzzy about the OS choosing which core(s) the game runs on)?

posted it in another thread or 2 in the last few days as well including some PM's to people.....

I emailed Skuzzy asking if removing the AMD Optimizier patch was required or not...he said in no particular words, that it was not required to be uninstalled.....only to disable running the game in win98 compatibility mode in the (3) OS's ( WinXP, Vista, Windows7 ) if people were doing it that way before this latest patch

but hey....we need to get the word out....most never look at the breakdown of the fixes a new patch has resolved..... :aok
