Need Some Hard Drive Replacement Help
« on: August 19, 2009, 11:29:41 PM »
I have a TigerDirect Systemax PC that's about 5 1/2 years old. It's been a great PC and still works OK and even runs AH decently, but I thought I'd do some upgrades here and there. I want to start with the hard drive then up the RAM, a 3.2GHz processor, then finally a video card. But my question now regards a replacement hard drive.
Here are the specs on my PC:

(1) Mini-Tower mATX Chassis w/350W PS P4M266 Motherboard
(1) Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
(1) Intel Pentium 4 Processor 2.8 GHz 533FSB w/ 512K Cache
(1) 512MB DDR333 PC2700 Non-ECC Memory (512MB x 2)
(1) 40GB Ultra ATA (5400rpm) Hard Drive
(1) GeForce FX5600-8X 128MB Video Card with TV Out
(1) 16x (max) DVD ROM Drive

I want to replace the drive with a 500Gb drive. What type will be compatible? I've found a local computer company that has been in business for many years that will mirror the data from my old drive to a new for a very reasonable price (-$50).

Thanks for the help.

Thats a pretty old computer, and from what I can manage to find spec. wise it would likely be worth your time to just replace the whole thing with a new build rather then upgrade it.

On the other hand if your really dedicated to updating it instead this HDD should work...

OMG...bleh. That drive is pure poop and it has not warranty.

I have this drive in my old P4 system right now and it's fast 3 yr warranty:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136109
And don't waste your time with getting the old drive "mirrored"...all your doing is moving your old problems from the old drive to the new drive...just do a complete clean reinstall.

You're not going to be able to get a good processor new for that system...the one you have is plenty...my 2.4Ghz is still going strong.

Try this memory out:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134040

That would be replacing the 2 sticks you have now with bigger faster memory.

And if you want to replace that old video card with an ATI instead:

Unfortunately there isn't an AGP Nvidia card available that can compete.

For 5 dollars more on cost but free shipping (which will out weigh the 5.00 difference) this drive is double the size and has a 32mb Cache http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136319

TD, I don't think his mobo will handle a SATAII drive sir. What he has now is a 40GB IDE ATA drive...chances of having even a single SATA1 connector on that mobo is slim.
