Stealing a Pennant

The Cardinals are at it again.

St. Louis just signed future Hall of Fame pitcher John Smoltz after being released by Boston. Smoltz cleared waivers today, and the deal was made official. He is due to start for St. Louis on Sunday in the generally ineffective Boggs/Wellemeyer 5th spot in the rotation.

Boston remains responsible for a sizeable amount of Smoltz's salary, with St. Louis only needing to pay a paltry $100,000, while bringing in a veteran hurler. Smoltz struggled with Boston, but will now be coming under the watchful eye of Dave Duncan, one of the best in MLB at righting struggling veterans (see Andy Benes in 2002).

Another brilliant move by Mozeliak. Smoltz joins Matt Holiday--one of THE impact trades this season, while ony giving up a handful of prospects, only one of whom was really considered a legitimate prospect--and Mark DeRosa for a song, and Julio Lugo for nothing at all (Boston is paying him through next season).

Good luck with him.  I think it is more likely that the surgery changed the movement of the arm and that is why he is struggling.  Boston should have stuck him in the minors.

Smoltz is over rated..... He will fail in St Louis too.
