true but the guns are the same and m18 weaker armor but it looks badass m10 looks like a box

M10 used a 3" anti aircraft gun also formerly used as the deck gun on submarines.  The gun was being replaced in general use by the 90mm gun for AA and subs.

The M18 used the same 76mm gun used in the Sherman, which is not the 17lb'er used in the Firefly.

Someone verify that the 76mm on the M10 and the M18 were the exact same thing using the exact same ammo.  Or not.

I'm reading from 2 different sources that say they were the exact same thing.

I'm seeing the M18 being one quick and fast moving TD using the hit-n-run dance vs the sit and snipe M10 tactic.  Regardless if the M10 has "more" armor or not vs the M18, it is still token vs enemy incoming AP (and HE) projectiles.

Bring on the M18 and intoduce a new kind of ground combat: a true hit-n-run capable vehicle.

a 3-inch (76mm) converted antiaircraft gun was mounted in an open-topped turret....  A large number of 3-inch guns were available because they were being replaced on submarines with 5-inch models and in antiaircraft units with 90mm guns.

The 76mm in the M18 was a lighter version of the 3-inch gun, apparently.

Different gun entirely, actually.

It was a new gun with breech similar to that of the 75 mm M3 Gun. It fired the same shell as the 3-inch (76 mm) gun of the 3in Gun Motor Carriage M10 tank destroyer, but from a different case.

according to the link, the "shell"' is the same but the "casing" is different.  *shrugs*   I dont get it.  The formed brass in which the primer, powder, and projectile are all "installed" (for lack of better terms) is the case, per say, but a "shell" at least to me is in reference to the liking of a shotgun "shell".

So... can we assume that the projectile was the same and the case was different???

"Shell" is a common term for any explosive-filled projectile.

so my assumption was right?   ;)  The M10 and M18 fired the same AP projectile with very similar (if not the exact same) performance from a different casing.   :aok
