kinda hard to do anything with the bootmgr is missing information when it tries to boot anything from the dvd drive now though. I have cleared up the whole bad drive thing as of now. I just need to figure out the bootmgr is missing from a hdd that got rebooted once the drive issue started.

Try selecting a CD drive as the boot drive if one is listed as a choice in BIOS. I've had a DVD drive that wouldn't load an OS until I ID'd it as a CD drive.

Try installing Ubuntu or some other flavour of Linux on it, once you've got it working with that, install W7 over the top (they use different filesystem settings, so its ok to go direct over the top)

Sounds like the mb isnt supporting your drive to me, but ymmv

I tried all of those but I still get the bootmgr is missing text... before I even get anywhere after the optical drive starts to pull up to boot. It seems like it tries to run for about 2-3 seconds and then automatically kicks it all back out to the text listed above. I am starting to think it is the hard drive itself instead of the DVD drive. Right about now it almost seems worth it to have someone else put this stuff together.

Reschke...that mobo is an EVGA mobo right? I've been looking around the web on the x58 chipset mobos and it seems that Intel is attempting to pull a Microsoft "f.u." on aftermarket mobo companies. From what I've seen posted and am getting told, with this first gen i7 and x58 combo it's a 50/50 shot at having a stable platform unless you're using an Intel board. (like WTF?)

Just a shot, if wife-ack is getting close to a hit, any possibility that you might chance an exchange to an Intel mobo? Couldn't hurt any more than it already has, and if the outcome is you have a bright shiny new hi perf gaming system instead of a case full of parts...

Yes it is an EVGA board. I don't think this was the major problem I am going to exchange the HDD today since it is brand new and see what I can do with a fresh setup.

Turns out it was the DVD drive and the HDD. I got a new HDD yesterday and today tried the DVD while on the phone with TD. (Nice help by the way)

Anyway the LG DVD burner works but not when I tried to install ANY software with the drive. I never checked that the other day but only checked to see if it would work. This afternoon I have tried to install several different CD and DVD based applications and none of them would install. I can however watch movies, play games, run applications that need the disks in the drive but not install them.

Ya know Reschke...I'm glad it was you and not me...I would be sleep deprived by now.

Another reason I will not buy bleeding edge...

I hope the rest of your build goes better.

I wish I could have gotten it all done in one day but my time schedule doesn't allow that. I usually drop in a couple of hours each day that I can work on this system just to get my head thinking about something other than work and kids. The only time I have spent more than that was this past Saturday night when it all came up. After I posted that yesterday about both the DVD and HDD drive I got to thinking about something...I wonder if the DVD was causing the bootmgr is missing error due to not reading the disks???

OK last update. New LG drive....it works but I am picking up a Samsung from TD next week in ATL. Anyway the system is up and has Vista Ultimate 64bit installed and man it boots in less than 20 seconds. The only thing that isn't loaded is the sound card drivers...just didn't have time during lunch to get it done.

From time I started complete OS installation today until finished with all motherboard and video card drivers loaded was less than 40 minutes. Now my system is ready to start the 24 hour test I like to run on mine to make sure that everything is g2g before loading it up with the games and such. This old system will be getting a wipe down and a complete dis-assembly to make it ready to pass down to the boys for their stuff. Then they will be able to play Supreme Commander with me and I can clean their clocks.
