Locations on the maps
« on: August 27, 2009, 10:06:25 AM »
Eventually when new maps get made and put in the game, I was hoping the locations on the maps (islands and bodies of water) had names on them like on a real chart or map. Not asking for planes and stuff. It's just little details like that on the clipboard map make it a little easier to tell other people where you are besides giving coordinates. Saw an FSO map last week and wow the clipboard map looked the part. I'm learning how to make maps so that I can show an example. I'm not exactly a good artist or computer guru so it'll take some time.

FSO's take advantage of some very nicely built maps (Kudu's to Dux & his crew)
Often you can get maps for special events which are based on real places and those will have place names, etc. Like you I like it, it all adds to immersion.

You won't see that in the main because those maps are designed for a totally different setup. They have to be designed to be balanced so that no one of the 3 sides has a starting advantage, or disadvantage.
So they tend not to use real life terrain, with real place names. Making it from scratch, so that the fighting and gameplay flows smoothly.

If AH maps based on real places is what your into, I'd strongly suggest checking out the AH events site.
Snapshots, FSO, or full blown scenarios are often designed around top quality player designed maps.

I'm thinking of fictitious places put into the names on the various places. Real life names do not belong in the ma I totally agree. I'll get a map made hopefully soon for an example.

I like this idea... I'm sure HTC or the mapmakers could come up with some good fictitious names to use.

Names like that are exactly what I'm thinking about for new maps to have. I don't think they can be put into the ones we currently use. That might upset the balance of the force.
