Fw 190F-8 gunsight
« on: September 01, 2009, 03:12:19 PM »
Not sure where I saw it but I recall seeing a custom gunsight for the Fw-190F-8 somewhere.
Search proved unsuccessful so if anyone can point me in the right direction I'd be grateful.
It had two small boxes near the lower part of the sight for aiming those rockets.
Thanks for the time and effort <S>

I've always used the aircraft cowling to aim the rockets on the 190F-8. :lol

I thought this might not be the correct forum but opted for high visibility and posted here. I should have been more patient and I would have found your future post Ghosth.
Thanks Baumer, I had an notion it was one of yours. As far as luck, I save all that for the Voyager I'm working on, it NEEDs it. It seems for everything I fix, another thing goes bad. Just replaced two ABS lines and in the middle of that the power steering pump decided to piss all its fluid on the garage floor. Power steering pump is next on the fix it list. While I'm working on that I'm assuming something else will go and need to be repaired. Good thing is, its running out of things that can break and need repairing :lol  So far fuel tank and fuel lines, rear brake lines, the ABS lines now and power steering pump on the deck.

I tried this offline with varrying degress of success.

How are you doing it? flying almost perfectly level? That's sort of hard to do when attacking ground targets.

When I was playing with it offline I discovered that the rockets could fall very short, or very long (when fired between 1000-800 yards) depending on your angle and speed in a dive. Most times in "average" dives they were quite high above the aimpoint. I wasn't really able to get many hits low-level, but managed (after a number of tries) to get a few T-34 kills from diving angles. Would be interested in hearing how you do it, for comparison.

Krusty,
I try and do it almost level at 300 mph. How I set it up is the key I think, I have found that the longer you hold the GV in the box the more accurate you'll become. A setup trick, instead of using the view zoom, I have my hat switch forward, set to move the eye position towards the sight and move my head up a bit. On the approach I get the GV in the appropriate box beyond 1.5k, as you get closer to the target you'll have to push the nose down to keep it in the box.

As far accuracy, the best I've ever done off-line (without the dive bombsite) is 10 hits out of 12 rockets, online I've managed 6 out of 12 hits. It is not an easy thing to master, but a single PB1 can kill a tiger. What I've been working on more recently is a way to kill werbie's and osti's from a greater distance.

Also, if anyone's interested I modified a REVI site with the rocket's for a sightly more historical look.

[edit] After rereading your post Krusty I had one more thought. In my opinion the most important aspect for consistent results is speed. I've worked with a few other people practicing the sight and they generally used different dive/glide angels than me, but they also found the best speed for the angle they approached from.

Thanks SkyRock,

Krusty I hate giving away all the details but, here's a film from some offline practice; I got 6 kills, 3 hits but were deflections, and 3 misses. (it's a lot easier offline when you know where they are!)
