Pfalz D.XII in color 1939 over LA
« on: December 01, 2009, 06:52:16 AM »
I just found this on a German news site.

Its about an old 16mm Kodachrome film about a Pfalz D.XII flying over LA in 1939. This piece of film was found shortly and was never completely published. The title of that film is "An Old War Bird" by Joseph Aiken and George Burling. It could be the only color pics from a Pfalz D.XII.

The history of this birds:

After 1918 about 175 Pfalz D.XII were shipped to the US for further testing. 10 years later most of these planes were sold. 2 off them were bought by the California company "Crawford Aeroplane & Supply Co.".

Crawford lends these two not flyable planes 1929 to Warner Brothers. Producer Howard Hawks needs them for his project "The Dawn Patrol". For the film they were painted all in red with a skull. This kind of marking was never used during WWI.

In the mid thirties Crawfords sells one of the planes to George Burling Jarrett, Huddonfield in New Jersey. In Atlantic City he opens the "Jarrett´s Museum of World War History". The other one is bought by Louis Kennell. He wants to make the Pfalz flyable again. He succeded and in 1938/39 the plane is up in the sky again. Kennell takes off Dycer Airport, LA and flys around Hollywood. During one of this flights this 16mm Kodachrome film was produced.

Years later both aircraft came into museums where they are still at display.

Jarretts Pfalz is located in the Seattle Museum of Flight

Kennells Pfalz can be seen (again painted in red with the skulls) in the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.

Two short parts of the complete film can be seen here. (look at pic number 13/14 and 14/14)

A-H ace Godwin Bromowski did fly an Albatross D.III (OEF) s.n. 153.209 though that was all red with a skull marking.
