Reformat Hard drive
« on: September 14, 2009, 10:51:00 PM »
Hi Fellas,

Wife's computer is just hosed.

I need to low level format the drive and do a complete reinstall.

I know I can take out her hard drive and put it in another computer and format.

Is there anyway to reformat in safe mode or any free tool I can use to do this without hassling with hd swapping.
Cd will boot from win xp cd but not to it when I put in the cd/iso with datalifeguard tools.

Goodness gracious.... I have a utility on our other computer but I don't have access to it at the moment. It would do exactly what you're asking. The other way would be to look for that software from the manufacturer of the hard-drive. I've heard people tell me that Seagate and Western Digital provide such software for their hard-drives.

You just want to do a low level format without having to take her hard drive out?  Sorry, it's late and I've been following in Cheech and Chongs footsteps for a few hours...

Anyhow, yeah..  If that's what you want to do, here's a good tool I use..  Download the latest one there..  The whole download usually contains an ISO..  Burn to a CD(don't just put the ISO on a CD: burn it to CD using Nero or something and specify that you want to burn an ISO so it burns in the right format)..  Make the CD/DVD drive boot-first in the bios..  Boot off the CD, when it pops up, type "autonuke" without caps and it will completely wipe the entire drive several times over (low level format)..  It'll also tell you if the drive is on the verge of failing or if it has bad sectors..  Once you have bad sectors, may as well replace it anyway, even though some other apps will let you mark those sectors as "bad" and not allow the drive to use them..  But still, bad sectors are just the impending doom of your drive anyway..  May as well replace it, especially if it's under warranty..
Dammit, I need some Vizine...

Most off the shelf computers these days have a partition with a backup of the system when it was new. You can access it usually by pressing a function (F) key during boot. Some are F8 or F10. Once you access the module you can restore the machine to the way it was when brand new.

Why do you want to do a low level format? If there is some concern with damaged sectors on the drive that would be a reason. If you just have a messed up Windows install all you need to do is use the Windows installer to delete the current partition, create a new partition, the let it do a full NTFS format. Good to go.

What gyrene said. Delete the partition, repartition it (in XP Pro boot cd) Reinstall OS,  then MB drivers, and your good to go.

Would only work if he has the CD. Most don't get one these days.

Good thing he has one then...  :D

Cd will boot from win xp cd but not to it when I put in the cd/iso with datalifeguard tools.

Even then using the factory recovery partition you go through the same process...still Windows setup...unless you have a weird system.
