elephant grass renders so slow
« on: September 13, 2009, 08:46:01 AM »
For me, your graphic of the tall, slender leaved, individual clumps of "elephant grass" (usually found along the truck convoy supply road) render painfully slow compared to all the other foliage.

I could send a screen shot of the grass if my description of it doesn't help with identification.

Just posting this in case it helps with the graphical stutter problems somewhere.

Please post a screen shot.  That is way too vague for us to figure out what you're talking about.

Got your email Blooz.  Is it only the grass by the roads that is causing this, or is it everywhere?  Also, are you seeing this only with the Pacific tile set, or do you see it with the European tile set as well?

I noticed this problem in the TA as I was landing. The supply convoy road is just off to the right when landing from west to east and saw a bunch of little white squares where trees should be. As I looked at the white squares turn into clumps of grass I thought, hmmm that's different, why did they render so slow? After I landed, I drove a jeep out there to get a sceenshot of the grass that I sent to you. That's all I did. So, I don't know tile set or even if this particular graphic exists on other maps. Sorry I can't be more help on this.

Still not right.

The grass renders a little faster but it's still way too slow.

I'm unable to reproduce the bug you're describing.  Have you checked to make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card?  Post your DXDIAG info (check the sticky at the top of this forum).

Blooz, check your background processes and CPU usage in the Windws Task manager (under Processes tab).  Your computer only has 512MB of RAM, and the page file usage indicates the computer may have too much running in the background.  Your performance issues could be related to constant memory swapping due to lack of free RAM.

Just a thought.

What game settings (Options->Graphic Detail and in the Advanced panel), including "Video Settings" are you currently running?

Turned off all the processes I dare. BIOS won't recognize more than 512mb of RAM. Everquest uses alot of page file (that's why it's so big).

But still...

Even with my mediocre vid card all the trees and shrubs render fine, except for that one type. Why? There's something different about that graphic that causes it to render so slow compared to everything else.

Why don't those little shrubs load into the world to start with like all the other trees and buildings? Why does it wait until I "look" before it loads the graphic for it?

Go to the TA and go to A127...select the runway so you're taking off northeast. When you spawn onto the runway snap your view to 3 or 4 o'clock. I see little white squares that fill in a couple seconds to be little clumps of grass. Meanwhile all this time every tree, bush, building...everything... is rendered just fine.

Doesn't really bother me. I can play with it like it is. I'm just trying to help smooth things out because I know that that graphic is not the way it should be.

Best of luck.

Salutes.

I performed the steps you mentioned in the TA, and I don't get those results.  Everything renders normally.  I'm with Skuzzy.  I think it's something with your system.  Given that no one else is piping in about this problem just gives more evidence of that.

If Getback could post what he's seeing this might help us if it is an issue on our end.
