B-17 at 35k in a turn without altitude loss.
« on: April 06, 2000, 02:24:00 AM »
was on my way to rooks side of the map when i see a red dot in my area and start looking round... spec way above... a B-17 at 35k.

I spend a drop tank and my aux tanks climbing to his altitude... then enter the longest running battle I've yet been in with a bomber.(the shortest this TOD was with a c47 when i lost ele in a dive   )

the only part I found frustrating was the B-17s ability to turn without loosing altitude at banks that apeared to be about 45 degrees much less have the power to do anything other than fly straight and level that high.

alls well that ends well though. I didnt get a scratch after almost 6 gun passes during which i progressively damaged parts of his buff. (bullets do interesting and cool things at 35k   )

I found it quite insulting that he had the ability to merrily continue along with his bombing flight plan making his turn with impunity to loss of altitude and enough speed to keep that altitude while banking at 35k at an agressive angle seemed uncharacteristic of a heavy bomber.

am I wrong?

should the b17 really out turn the p38 at 35k in initial turn?

Welcome in the FBB (Frustrated-By-Buffs) Club, Citabria.
And there is another one: FBDW (Frustrated-By-Ditching-Wrecks).

But my first Club was and still is "IWTB:WB3.0"

Citabria, to answer your question, yes and no. I think you were on last night when I was at 36k bombing F4. Anyway first off, it depends on the way he turned. If he used his rudder then yes he could have kept his speed up, however last nite I turned hard with elevators and lost over 2k. Anyway, I have heard HT and Pyro say that the B17 can outrun and out perform any aircraft above certain alts. I can remember when I outran Cobra (who was flying a P38) in my DAMAGED B17. The only reason he got me was because I ran outta fuel   Anyway before I confuse myself, I'll shut up

Well hopefully, HTC will do something very soon about the bombing accuracy of Strato buffs.

I have seen what you are talking about Citabria. It seems the way to pull that kind of Move in a Bomber is to sit yourself in a gunners pos and then pop to the F3 view and then steer with the rudder (pedals) and i can make those 30-45deg banks with no loss of alt and damn little speed. Helps alot when turning back onto target, but a total "grrrrrrr"  when on the other end trying shoot em down.
