Power supply + odds and ends
« on: September 27, 2009, 07:09:32 PM »
Many thanks to the folks who replied in my other thread (P5Q-Turbo alternate). I'm borrowing a friend's rig to get 'net access, so my apologies for the late reply. After comparing spec, I'll probably stick with the P5Q Turbo board after all. It does what I need and Asus tech support seems to be up to par.

Newegg doesn't have a PC Power 750w in stock, and hasn't for quite a while. Is there an alternate way to go without waiting a month to get one of the coveted PC Power units? I was looking at the Corsair 750 TX or 650 TX units because of the positive reviews and specs. According to Newegg's power calculator I need 450w minimum; I'd prefer 650w just to be safe.

Video-wise I'm looking at a Gigabyte GV-R467D3 (Radeon 4670 512mb) for two reasons. First, it'll push my games fast enough for my purposes. Second, it doesn't require extra power via a PICe plug. I've never had a Gigabyte card, just ATi-made units. Takes or opinions? I'm open to alternatives so long as the offending card isn't 10" long. Swapping Gigabyte for another brand (ATi, Sapphire) is no problem at all, either. Just keep in mind all my ordering will be through Newegg, and I'd prefer an ATi chipset.

I would love to know how Skuzzy got around using the .NET Control Center with his Radeon card.

One last Q... for an Intel E7500 CPU should I stick with the stick HSF or spring for an after-market unit?

Thanks again, folks!

They have the Blue and Red.   Get the Blue one, identical to the Black.

The guts of it are the same.

agree with Karaya,  I have (2) red PC Power 750w units in 2 different PC's but guts are all the same

and SKuzzy does not use anything but the Ati Display Driver last I recall.........

is all I use myself on my WinXP pro install....... does perfectly fine........ no unneeded resources being gobbled up by the Ati CCC or Ait Tray Tools......

Windows 7 partition is completely opposite matter though........

I use the ATI Tray Tools.  Thankfully ATI/AMD supplies the video card driver as a stand-alone package.  It is the best way to go as it allows you to get around all the other crap the "full install" includes.

Flak,

I have the corsair TX750 in my machine, seems to work very well, been 2 years and not a single problem. On the otherhand,I've gone through several antec psu's so stay awya, far away from them.

I went with the corsair purely because of price, the PC&cooling 750 watt unit was 20 dollars more and the corsair had a 30 dollar rebate so 50 bucks said it's mine..... :aok

Thanks for the info, Skuzzy! I was wondering how you got around the CCC.

Here's the ugly list currently in the ol' cart. Any conflicts/nasty surprises I over-looked?

Win XP Sp2
Asus P5Q Turbo
Intel E7500 2.9GHz @ 1066 FSB
Gskill 2x 1GB PC2 8500 DDR2 (specifically model F2-8500CL5D-2GBPK)
Sapphire Radeon HD 4670 512MB (model 100295HDMI, listed as the HD 4670 New Edition on Sapphire site)
Seagate ES.2 Barracuda 250GB ST3250310NS (NS series I presume?)
Samsung SHS223B DVD burner
PC Power 750w "Blue"
Audigy SE 7.1 Retail

Mash, I hope you're right on the PC Power 750w. Judging from the reviews you'd think it was a Sparkle or Antec unit.
