Windows 7 Question

Well Im going to be upgrading to Windows 7 once it comes out since my school offers the ultimate version for $100.

Now my question is this,

I have Windows Vista Home Premium, will I be able to use Windows 7 ultimate upgrade or will I need to purchase the full Windows 7 ultimate version?  Will I be limited to only using Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade?

Im not really sure on this as I really havent found a clear answer on google.

If you buy the ultimate version you can do an in-place upgrade. Microsoft seems to be saying this is ideal but I dont think it ever has been before and why is it only ideal if you buy the ultimate version to upgrade the ultimate version and not the professional version? I think we are paying for an upgrade that is a downgrade and I think its going to screw everything up so I will be ready for it.

 You can use the upgrade version as long as you have your Vista key. If you have 32 bit installed and are going to 32 bit Win7 you can install the Upgrade version as an upgrade. If you change from 32 to 64 bit or vice versa then you need to do a clean install with the Upgrade version.

Can you upgrade and upgrade? I think you can... but only as a clean install.

Alright Del answered the question with the chart.

It will be a clean install unfortunately but Ill be saving myself $100 or so by buying the ultimate through the school rather than buying home premium in stores.

On a side note...somehow I could buy the 64 bit version already of windows 7 ultimate even though the release date isnt for another few weeks.

What is the difference between a retail OS and an OEM OS?

(note: I am not at all suggesting anyone buy from Newegg, this is for demonstration purposes only)

Microsoft puts limitations on the OEM version, i.e. you can only install it on one machine, that they don't put on the retail version, which you can install on different machines but only one machine at a time. There is also the support limitation you quoted. I don't know how strict they are supposed to be in practice. I've reinstalled OEM versions on full hardware upgrades that appeared to MS to be new machines and they always allowed it when I explained it was an upgrade. I don't use them for support so that issue hasn't come up.

Win 7 is available now through certain channels like the one Hoarach posted and will be in general release in two weeks.   :D
