I have been building a new computer, but since money was short, I used some parts from the gateway 820 that I had.  by next month, I'll have enought money to have all new parts on my new computer, so I am thinking of rebuilding the old gateway with the original parts that I took out.  but I have several questions and would appreciate to hear from you.

1- since i reinstalled windows xp from the gateway using the old hd and processor into my new computer (motherboard is new).  will i have a problem if I buy windows 7 oem and install in on new computer using new hd and remove windows xp.

2- can I reinstall windows xp on the original computer (it came with it and once i put back all original parts), and can I do it using a new hd since the original hd (now in my new computer) has lots of bad sectors and needs to be replaced.

I am giving my old compute to my mom, who will be upgrading from a laptop with windows me.  Your help is appreciated.

No definitive answer available but windows7 ships with tighter oem rules i.e no oem for single component purchase. A working system is required iirc

The old answer is that you can have Windows installed on one machine for every license key. If you completely erase it from one machine (or destroy the HD, ect) then you can put it on another. If that's changed with Win7, I don't know, but that applies to XP.

That has never been true with OEM licenses. They're cheaper but tied to a certain hardware.

In practise you have been able to transfer them but strictly speaking it's illegal.

OEM licenses are the only kind you can buy for yourself, are they not? Doesn't make much sense to me that you buy your own disk and can't transfer it. I could see that applying to one from a manufacturer (Dell, HP, ect), but to your own copy?

well actually i was able to transfer the old xp licence to new computer.  new computer had new everything except processor, hd and dvd player, and had no problems installing xp from my old gateway.  now I wanna transfer it back to its original computer and buy windows 7 oem, which is where i have the question.  i guess I'll find out when i buy oem if it works  :pray :pray

No, OEM licenses are discount priced operating systems for system builders. Retail packages are one you buy for yourself. They come with full support and transfer rights.

MS OEM licences have a "points" calculator attached to them.  Each hardware component carries a different number of points and when the threshold is broken due to hardware changes it flags the system.  IIRC motherboards are pretty much a deal-breaker while RAM, video cards, souncards, etc. are pretty low priority.

You can google this.  There are posts with the actual points values and thresholds.

Even then it's only an annoyance, since a call to Microsoft stating that you changed components or that you've swapped computers and still only have it on one will get your key unlocked. At least, it did for mine.

Ive had to do this several times, you used to have to talk to a person, but now it's done via computer.  It takes a bit longer with all the "is this correct, say yes or no" crap, but "she" is still able to generate a new code for ya in about 20 min or so.

I've had the transfer denied once with XP. And Windows7 ships with tighter OEM rules. Earlyer you could buy a 20 bucks dvd-drive to get OEM install - with the new rules you must get a working computer i.e. cpu. mobo, ram minimum. If the info from websites was right.
