Having issues with Orange arena "Network Delay"....
« on: October 09, 2009, 05:57:15 PM »
:furious  Having some issues with the "network Delay Variance" in Orange arena. :frown:

It all begins with a mid to low FR (35 FPS-15 FPS) in tower. I open clipboard and click on map for the drop-down options, find and click "Network Status" to find an erratic line bouncing WAAAYYY above and WAAAAYYY below the "0" line.  :furious All the while I get massive stutters and screen freezes. FR's go from 60 FPS to 2 FPS. This is absolutely unplayable.  :cry This ONLY happens in Orange Arena. It doesn't matter how many players are on, what vid settings I use, the low amount of vid and system RAM I have, or processor size.  :headscratch: Network status to Orange Arena has been virtually unplayable for me since Ver. 2.15.  :huh Blue on the other hand is fine, I get great steady FR's and no stutter.  :aok The Network Status for Blue always shows a nice smooth line with very very very little variations.   Why is this? Has anyone else had or have this problem?  :headscratch: I love playing in Orange where most of my "online buddies" are.  :joystick:

  I use Verizon FIOS as my ISP and have a 20Mbps connection, very stable. Connected to router via ethernet cable. Ran "Ping Plotter" to Orange server IP addy and route traced pretty good with avg round trip time of 40-50ms.  :bolt: There is a "hop" just before the Orange server that spikes around 350ms(high) and drops to 40ms(low).  :bolt:

I will post some screenies later to better show what I'm talking about.

Is there anything I can do?

That sure is hard to read.

The "Variance" line normally indicates how well your CPU is responding to game requests.  If it is not flat as a pancake in the center, it means the CPU is off doing other things rather than running the game.  This could be an enormous number of things.  Ping requests on your network connection can cause it.  Anything at all can cause the CPU to stop paying attention to the game.

Not to hijack or anything really, but what does the bottom line indicate really?  What should it look like ideally?  Mine usually looks like a sine wave but flat at the top and bottom.  I never know if that's good or bad or what.

The "Variance" measures CPU response time to the game.  The bottom line measures server reponse time to your computer.  Typically, the bottom line will be like a fine tooth saw bouncing between 0 and 10 milli-seconds as that is the granularity of the server.

Soooo.... basically its something I have to just deal with on occasion? I mean, it happens say 6 times out of 10. I guess its not really that bad, I just go to Blue when Orange goes wonky. Yesterday morning, around 11 am EST I couldn't get off the ground in Orange without severe stutters, tried again last night around 8pm EST and everything was fine. Amount of players in arena was pretty much the same both times.

Not sure what all my CPU would be dealing with, I use a program to stop all unnecessary processes, and manually shut down those that it doesn't. The only processes and services that are running are the critical system stuff that when I go to shut down, they shut the whole system down.
Anyways, thank you Skuzzy. You guys there at HTC are top notch in my book.  :aok
