Preset optimized views
« on: October 25, 2009, 07:03:55 PM »
One of the biggest ordeals I've had to go through while recruiting my friends to start playing is setting up views. I don't know if it's possible, but could these be set up to be more noob friendly when someone starts the game? Everyone changes them to personal preference, but it really does no good for a new person to look straight back at their seat. I think having better preset views for planes, or maybe a toggle to use better preset views(like the stall limiter checkbox) would really help get folks up and flying and enjoying the game much more quickly. As it is, it's almost like work and a lot of people I've tried to get up in the air find it really annoying to have to go through all the planes and changing the default views for every plane they fly till they find one they like.

If I recall you can download a .zip in the Trainers section with almost all the planes views pre-optimized. Just a matter of doing a bit of copy and pasting.

Ya, I was just looking for a way to streamline it a bit more :) If it was something that just came by default it'd be much better IMO, especially for folks who don't have current players to help them. Just a thought, the less work someone has to do just to start playing a game the better. I understand that copy/pasting isn't a big deal, but in my experience people are most excited when they try something new. Zip files and copying/pasting kinda curbs that initial excitement.  New players already have the deck stacked against them, I just don't think that setting views helps with getting someone involved and wanting to play.

If this hadn't been one of the top things the folks I've gotten to play have complained about I wouldn't have mentioned it. Think it's a worthwhile wish :)

Only concern I have - do newbs know how important the view system is? I guess this would help new players with flight sim experience, but the total noob...I get the feeling they wouldn't know the importance of views. Most arcade style games don't even have such a thing programmed.

What is optimal for one bloke may not be for the next.  Views can be used in different manners for different things.  I know some fellas keep there "head" the same distance from the dash with only left-right and up down variances regardless of the view.

Perhaps a "newb" tutorial on that stuff?  I learned on my own after a few days.

What I'm getting here is that it's not about "optimal" for everybody - it's just so that newbs don't have to look up a bunch of crap and go through so much work just to have something workable.

I.e., nobody would argue that most of our default 6 oclock views are terrible. Get these views and other terrible views changed.

Optimizing Your Views from netAces. Same page is on the trainers' site, but it is currently down.

There's lot of good tutorials and files you can download and install, but all of that misses the point that you're asking someone who is new to do work just to have the game setup properly.  That may seem like a trifle, but it's in addition to learning how to takeoff, land, turn without stalling, etc.

a new guy  is not gonna know that all this info is available somewhere so might as well just include it with the d/l.  game is already complicated to begin with  just make it a little easier.

lowers the "cost" of entry. Plus, I'd suspect also helps out some laptop pilots that have no numpad. I've gotten to the point on my laptop where I have to A) Set num lock, B) hold Fn and one of the keys on the right side of the keyboard, C) remove my finger from FN and put a finger on a 2nd key on the right side of the keyboard if I want an "angle" and not a straight up/down/left/right view, D) use the arrows and pgup/down to get view set, E) hit F10, F) Pray there are no keyboard conflicts (some views I just can't get to with this method).
All this so I can use my gamepad properly (long story, but basically can't use my HOTAS with my laptop due to lack of portability/space).

On my desktop, it's easy (HOTAS and full KBD helps!). On my laptop, it stinks, and I had NO CLUE there's already a save file out there with optimised views. I'm so downloading that!

Three thoughts:

The idea of canning for distribution customized sets of "optimal" views/head-positions gets a big  :aok

The idea of changing the defaults gets a very big

Really new noobs to the whole genera don't even realize they need to look anywhere but forward.  Think arcade players.  Let them go through at least some learning curve.

Why give a disincentive to the "n00bs" ? If a new player looks behind them, and sees nothing but the rear seat, why would they look anywhere but forward?

though I do agree that having different "default sets" is kind of a cool idea.
