Smoke Screens
« on: October 15, 2009, 12:48:18 PM »
As anyone have seen in Aces High, smoke screens, are very limited in distance, height, and direction of it's spread. To make it more realistic, can the smoke screen spread out in a circular range from its starting point? This will a better thickness. Thoughts and Comments.

Smoke is a serious performance hindrance.  I don't see how adding more smoke would add anything to immersion, but it would most certainly cause a frame rate slide show for most players flying over the base.

When you're in a tank, and your spawn is camped, or bogged down by nme tanks, or aircraft, you want to disappear so you can move freely. Smoke Screen are to limited and don't really work in the game because they can't spread out in all directions like it should.

Oh, smoke for tanks, I thought you meant base smoke.

Base smoke? As in screens for GVs and launching aircraft! Thats a great idea Grizz!

Real smoke doesn't spread out in all directions.  It disperses via wind, even light wind, which is usually in one direction.  That's exactly what it does in AH already.

I'm talking about smoke from smoke grenades or shells.  Smoke from fires disperses straight up at first (unless there is strong wind) due to buoyancy of the hot gases in which it is produced and then levels out as it cools by mixing with air.   It then disperses by wind.  The black fire smoke in AH disperses outward from the source too much, it should be a narrower column; which would help with frame rates.  But that's beside the point.

Speaking of smoke screens it would be nice to allow the destroyers of the carrier group to lay smoke screens to mask the carrier group.  Destroyers laid smoke screens in both WWI and WWII.  Maybe limit each destroyer o one smoke screen per 10 minutes or something similar???  Thoughts???

What's the point? We don't have submarines and PTs are almost useless. In regard to the original post, I think I would prefer a thicker smoke, not a smoke which travels in two directions. In case you're wondering, no, I do not want the smoke to consist of the current cloud design we're using. I would prefer something different which at least emulates volumetric clouds in the simulation without, "stimulating" frame rates.

I'm not saying, have the smoke to travel in two directions. I meant to have the smoke to travel almost in a 360 radius from its center. And I know smoke traveled in the direction of the wind, but it too limeted in how wide it can spread.
