indy, transatlantic terminology crosswire, when i said punchers i meant bar brawlers like that muppet who was in the guys face, not pro sportsmen trained to punch.  'Punchers' not punches

I'm just laughing at your slapping technique :) Principally the "light" part. I don't think that's gonna work well... kinda confident about that actually. Head shots work because they either slam your brain into your skull, inducing a stupor or unconsciousness.. or, your jaw slides back, hits a specific nerve, and you black out. A light slap won't be accomplishing much beyond a) making the other person kinda mad and b) leaving your own head totally unprotected.

Indy! doh that is very true, is it too late for me to substitute 'light' for 'freakin' whack 'em'? (although is it not more a matter of following through the target more than power?)

both! For a little kid though, (pure opinion here) grappling is probably better to teach them at first, then cross-train later. Much, much easier to hit somebody hard when they're flat on their back, even if you don't really know how

Understood, possibly not teaching them to hit them on the floor till they get to 16?

Suggestion originaly in relation to the thug vs ex army clip, If the kids want to try it in schools i take no responsibility as of this notivce.

nah......bullies are generally cowards.

show some resistance, and they'll push harder, 'cause they need to save face.

beat the poop outta them one time, and they'll never bother ya again. they'll move to an easier target.

Take it from someone who experienced the "campus bullies" once...(just once)...3 ring binder held in both hands (science or history text book is better)...the "spine" of the book (side with the rings and steel bar) facing up...angled shot to the sternum followed very quickly by a 2 handed uppercut motion to the lower jaw with spine of the book and bully 1 goes down...using the momentum you have step on the top of bully number 2's foot and using an angled 1 handed arcing swing with the spine side and hit bully number 2 in the side of his head...if he manages to block it, step into him and with your free hand push him in the chest while continuing to step on his foot...he has no choice but to step back with his free foot...hit him in the groin.

If there are more than 2 bullies...run as fast as you can...then take some mixed martial arts that can teach you self defense.

Or have the toughest S.O.B. in school as your best bud...  :D

Always worked for me that I'm larger than everyone else. I never really hurt any body, but you don't get picked on either.

I find it very effective just to put a haymaker right into the windpipe.

If you land it square its a devistating blow. Usually puts them down in 1 punch.

edit: i just watched the hit a few times over cant actualy decide if he slaps him or hits a lightning left jab on his chin, any ideas?

Definitely the slap.... you can see that is what he is going for from the start..... he obviously doesn't want to hurt him..just teach him a lesson.

He tries the technique at least twice, maybe three times.  It is the last one that floors the guy.  If you look at his stance, he has a ready open hand posture and he's waiting to time his technique.  Because of the angle of the strike, he doesn't really have to hit him with significant force or follow-through to deal a stunning but non-injurious blow.  The quick unexpected nature and the twist of the head is what makes it a good technique if you don't want to really hurt or kill someone.  The "Dad" knows exactly what he's doing, and he repeats the technique until it works, and it freaks the yob out so he runs like the coward bully most yobs like him really are.

I've met a few bullies like that, but luckily I only had to drop one of them and got away unscathed.  One other kid pulled a pocketknife on me, but I figured I'd get busted if I took a tire iron to his head so he walked away feeling like a big man.

For what it's worth, Akido is really good for self defense.  The centering exercises are great for balance under pressure and the techniques don't rely on a strength or agility advantage over the opponent.

In one demo of an Akido exercise, I ended up holding my roommate off the ground with a straight extended arm.  That was approx 140 lbs held straight out at arms length, him hanging on my wrist and lifting his feet off the floor for 10 seconds.  It was a damn effective exercise on focusing your strength, but at a cost... I pulled almost every muscle in my body, right arm, and left side of my neck doing that, but didn't feel a thing until the next day.  Ouch.

The USAF Academy self defense instructor taught primarily from Akido techniques, with a hefty dose of common sense mixed in with a touch of judo and boxing.  Good stuff, haven't had to use it fortunately.  Probably not much good in combat either, just supposed to help avoid beatings.
