Don't forget to try the N1K2. Perhaps not quite as powerful as the 84 but it's 4 cannons are lethal. I think I would prefer the N1 as a furballer to the 84.

Nik is in general going to be easier to master than the 84 also.

You can also dive the N1K without fear of losing parts.   The Ki-84 seems to have historical reliability issues built into the model.

I'd recommend the KI84 if you are looking for a competitive late war Japanese plane.  Fight uphill with it and when you get to that magic number for your flaps drop those puppies out and watch other planes flounder around you as you easily turn into them and saddle up for the kill.  The only way they will get away is a prolonged dive and at that point you can just follow along with your altitude and wait to see if they want to try and climb back up to you.

D3A1. If you can handle the slow speed, then it is the plane for you. It can out-turn most all of the planeset, and can carry a couple bombs as well. There is nothing better than the feeling of shooting down a couple spixteens in a D3.

I'm not even joking  :P

I (of course) would concur w/ the niki.

It is a very well rounded aircraft.

Good guns.  (ballistics are "ok" but 4x20mm makes up for it)

Great ammo load.  (something to be said for 800 rounds)

Good legs.  (100% and d/t)

Decent ord.  (2x250kg)

The above are the main reasons I fly the niki.

I can deack a base and STILL have ammo left over for 3-6 kills.

With the cannon and bombs it is in the top 10 as a town killer.

From a pure dogfighting perspective the ki84 is superior but...

I can get 3-5 kills in a ki84 whereas I will get 6-10 in a niki.

The Ki-61 is a great plane when you have empty wing tanks. Nose-mounted 20mm guns are great for deflection shooting. Slowish, but great in dives and loops. Fly it like you would a P-40.
