Perk the 190A8 with 30mm !!!!

S!

Ok, I'm kidding.   :)

Have to say though, the A8 is a terrific performer...

Considering it has 2 howitzers hanging under its wings and a ton of armour.

I was flying in the CT the other day.  As usual there was the huge numbers online.  Me and someone else.

He was flying bombers, so I took a heavy 190.  (I usually fly the A5)

But then he switched to a Spit IX.

Oops I thought, I'm a goner.

I had a 1k alt advantage when I spotted him, and he was climbing rapidly so I figured either I run or engage him now.

So I started a series of dive and zoom attacks.

Man, the A8 zooms well considering its weight!  And accelerates great in a dive.  And turns really nice over about 90 degrees.

Keeps energy well too as long as you don't crank the stick too much.

And of course those guns.    :)

If you hit...  BOOM!

A8 is best instant fireball producer I've run into.

Plus if you have to run, a little dive will put your speed up there quick nicely and it holds that speed with the WEP for a LONG time.

Sure it isn't really competitive with a La-7 or a D9 but it really is a great aircraft versus fighters considering it was designed to knock down big lumbering bombers.

Someones realising the worth of 190A8  ;)

I've never liked 30mm though..  rather use 4x20mm or 2x20mm, but nearly never used 30mm's.

too little ammo with inperfect trajectory...

I am a big believer in the 190a8 now.

used to think the 190a5 was most powerful 190 but im convinced the a8 triumphs by sheer firepower of those extra 2 20mm mg151 or with the 30mm tater guns.

not to mention the improved endurance of the 190a8 with its aux fuel tank.

I've actually been flying it for the reason's that Fester listed above- the extra firepower and the aux tank (which is about 10 minutes worth of extra fuel I believe).

The plane is a flying brick, but if you keep it fast and fly with a wingman you can generally fly into a furball on one side, kill someone, drag the other guy out and let your wingman kill it, and you live.  Definately not a good plane for "lone-wolfing" in though.

Ugh, just got done trying to fly it alone.  My words of advice, don't do it.  Maybe if you are as good as fester is, you can fly it alone with success, but if you are only about as good as me you will get torn to shreds by an La7, N1K, or Spit that is anywhere remotely near your altitude.

190 A8 has been my main ride for several tours now (check stats if ya don't belive me) usually fly it Lone Wolf or use it to B&Z in furrballs with either 4x20mm or 2x20 and 2x30mm, it's not a good turner once you loose E, flat turn with it and you die sooner or later, can't run at the deck nor can it climb but it can roll  :)

It's one of the toughest planes when it comes to handeling but quick kills makes it great.

I eat 190A8's for breakfast.

If they're flown by the enemy, that is  :)

Not so difficult to bleed e from, not too hard to avoid its guns.

Hi,

in "Under the Red Star" by Geust I just found mention of a light-weight Fw 190A-8 captured by the Soviets. They found that it weighed 3986 kg - just 40 kg more than the Fw 190A-5 tested by the USN, and 409 kg less than standard A-8.

It lacked the offensive firepower of the heavy weapons variant, but it certainly made up for it in improved manoeuvrability and climb.

Wonder what they had to pull out to get the aircraft that light? Outer guns, cowl guns, rear fuel tank, the bomb rack and maybe some armour - I guess that might do the trick.(Btw: equivalent weight for the AH Fw 190A-8 is reached if you have only 25% fuel)

Hi Juzz,

the light-weight Fw 190A-8 captured by the soviets was still armed with the cowl guns. Eliminating the wing guns saved 150 kg, and the aircraft also carried 90 kg less fuel. I'm not sure about the bomb rack weight, but it seems to habe been around 100 kg. This amounts to about 340 kg even before the removal of the tank and the fuel lines - and we're only 69 kg away from the light-weight target of 3986 kg.

Maybe this is something out of context to what is being discussed here but,if I recall correctly the 190A8 ,F8 and Dora were enabled  for Jabo and could carry 3 250kg bombs one on the centerline and 2 on wing pylons. NOw as to why the 190s lack their jabo qualities in AH, and in Brand W they have it, I cannot comment further.

Since the center bomb rack was designed for 500 kg bombs, a Fw 190 with wing pylons could carry 2x 250 and 1x 500 kg for a total bomb load of 1000 kg.

On the armour part; Sorry but still suffering from bloody one-ping-engine-out syndrome. Apart from that, yes it's a great plane and I'm using it more and more.

I love the Spits that think they can win a HO against it, lol. Always wondered why Spits with the higher maneuver capability try to HO any other plane anyway. I can't resist to return the favour of HO when I see a Spit try it,    :D
