IMO if you have to asking then I really don't think you should be doing it.
However should you be dead set on performing the upgrade yourself,

Think of Windows 7 as Vista w/SP5.  Microsoft could easily release service packs to bring Vista to Windows 7 level, but they will not do that.  Vista got a black eye and is a marketing nightmare for them.  They want it dead and gone.

That said, there is already a zero-day exploit for Windows 7, so you might want to wait until MS releases the next set of patches to correct it.

Skuzzy you'll appreciate the humor in this, I had an error in HD that wouldnt allow me to boot caused after one of their updates, so I logged onto MS chat to talk to tech support. Their solution to my issue was "obtain a Windows 7 disc".

The exploit is AFAIK a denial of service type exploit and it can be offset by disabling file and printer sharing in networking or by blocking TCP ports 445 and 139.

This is the standard thing I do on all my home computers. Disable everything except ipv4 from networking, kill netbios helper, ssdp, indexing etc. I don't need to run a server at home, I don't need print services running, I don't need LAN so why open security holes for nothing.

Correct Ripley.  Unfortunately, most people have no idea how to properly secure a computer.  They think if they install Norton they are covered.  Then again,  I know a couple of very large companies that require thier remote employees to use file sharing across the Internet to protect sensitive data from being placed on thier local computer.  Hehe.  You have to laugh a bit about the irony of that one.

Then there is the new Flash exploit which cannot be fixed.  All Adobe can do is ask WEB site developers to do things a specific way.  Yeah, that will happen too.

WARNING:  You should disable ActiveX, Java, and Java scripts before hitting the link I supplied.  When I see a site plant 20 tracking cookies, it gives me cause for concern.  If it was not illegal I would copy the article here.
