Reliable Print Server.

What brand and model is the most reliable print server? How much money does not matter. Thank You Ketinkrad

A print server? You looking for a wireless capable for home use, something to connect an old printer to and share out or something for enterprise networking use?

There is a difference...and in some instances (home use) there are some simple solutions to accomplish what you want.

Ok...next question, USB or Parallel?

How many printers are you wanting to connect?

No clients going to use wireless connections to print?



I'm asking because a single computer can be used as a "print server"...some newer inkjet and laser printers have built in wireless printing capability that will allow multiple users to connect and print...and if you have a printer with a built in network card on it, all you have to do is connect it to a switch or hub and set the network settings on it.

Otherwise you might be looking for something like this:

and you will need a USB cable to attach the printer to it...if it's an older parallel (centronics) cable printer you can use this type of adapter:

I have a HP network printer that can be connected by wire or wireless to my Linksys wireless router.  I have mine wired and it can be accessed by any computer on my network at any time.

I also have another HP printer connected directly to one of my computers.  It can also be accessed by any computer on the network but the computer it's connected to has to be turned on.

It would be good to know if this is for home use or business.  Most businesses use a computer as a print server.

Exactly...most of the printers where I work are directly connected to the network...a small number of form printers are connected to an actual server via network connections and we use a 3rd party software program on the server to setup the way the forms print out.

I have 2 printers at home...one uses a wired network connection to my router, the other is using a wireless network connection to my router...all of my systems can print to either one.

My print server is a parrel port server and it is for one printer. The printer is an old black @ white laser printer. The server is a linksys and trying to get linksys customer support to help is a night mare from india. Also the printer has no board or card inside to connect to usb or ethernet. Thank You.

The last company I worked for as a system admin had a few dot matrix printers. I plugged them into the network using HP 300x print servers. A little spendy but bulletproof.

yeah those HP300 work ok for parallel printers, seem to lock up and need rebooting every so often though. quite pricey too. I've also got an ?epson one for USB A3 inkjet too, very cheap and works perfectly.

I have an older Hewlett-Packard Jetdirect 500x print server. (Now out of production, replaced by the 510x.)  For several years it has been totally reliable.  I have it wired into my home network, and have two of its three parallel ports occupied, with an HP DeskJet 950C and an HP LaserJet 5P.  It gets its IP address via DHCP from my router/firewall, and has a little Java-based interface I can get to with a browser from any computer on my network.  If you have a few older printers with parallel ports and no Ethernet ports, something like the Jetdirect is a handy gadget.

Linux and CUPS

Works great, and will handle as many printers as it has USB and parallel ports.

just did a install for a customer Windows 7 64 bit choked on it
