W32/Jeefo is a six year old virus. There is no excuse for having it on your computer except complete and utter incompetence.  :huh
It is better to be violent, if there is violence in our hearts, than to put on the cloak of nonviolence to cover impotence.

All it took was not scanning one zip file I downloaded. :) A collection of old, out-of-print games. Only one contained the virus, so I figure it wasn't a purposeful spread of the virus.

Actually, it's the old-style viruses I'm susceptible to. I haven't found a free antivirus that balances effectiveness with performance, so I don't use one. Once BitDefender expires (I want to punch whoever wrote the program in the face, and buy a drink for whoever makes the disinfection routines) I'll have a look at ThreatFire. Sitting behind a firewalled router and Firefox with NoScript keeps out all the "active" viruses, but ones like Jeefo can still get in.

Wasn't a "oh crap guys, watch out for this virus!" as much as "this thing was a pain and viruses can have any payload they desire. Watch out for this kind."

Well, in 24 years of working in the industry, and specializing in Security, having a friend write one of the more prolific early boot sector virus's... I can tell you that it's not uncommon for compromised PC's (or networks) to be used for this purpose and there have been many other such cases around the world.
You're talking about a malware download (usually accomplished with knowledge) that includes a backdoor trojan connecting to a botnet...like I said, doesn't "just happen" without someone at least having a clue that something is happening...after 24 years in the business, you know that's obvious.

I'd like to know the name of that porn downloader virus, because there isn't one on any list.

Which boot sector virus did your friend write? Those were some fun viruses to play with...difficult to get rid of too without a low level format of the drive.

This is all very true.
They can use you and your system without you even knowing it. The judge will not lesson nor will your families or anyone else. I worked with a US Government cyber crime unit and they do not care, its on your system and they found it. If it is on your computer YOU are finished.
People do not understand what a ‘hacker’ or a virus can really do and they are not going to learn. If you really want to know look up Black Hats and White Hats, there are some free training videos on how to be a good or bad guy.
Yes you should be very worried about this.

Keep virus software up to date every day.
Load anti spybot software and keep it up to date.
Password everything. If your computer or wireless network does not have a password you stand out like a sore thumb.

There is no real secure network if your on the internet. The only thing you can do is make your system a bit harder that someone else’s system to get in to so the Black Hat picks on some one else. Most of the time they will go for the easy target.

Good Luck

Thank you for the info.

But with all due respect, should it not be the state of local level enforcement of child-porn?

It scares me  :noid that the federal government is looking into our computers.  How do we know that maybe child-porn is 'planted' in our system and them cracking us because we, lets say are constitutionalist; end-the-fed; libertarians.  What I am getting at is that how do we know that there is no alterior motive of the feds because the patriot act permits and goes around the 4th amendment.  :noid

Why is this not a local enforcement issue?  I mean this with respect to you sir. :salute

Some virus's will deliver a downloader first, that will then retrieve the malware/backdoor. It happens all the time with people being clueless - after 24 years in the business I know that the level of stupidity and ignorance will never cease to amaze me. Take a look at the Mac OS/X malware, it takes ignorance and stupidity from the user to get infected, but they do, and there's now a mac os/x based botnet.

My friend wrote the stoned virus, aka marijuana virus.

You actually know the guy who coded "stoned"?  :huh That was a great piece of work...caused me all kinds of fits...can't tell you how many companies got hit with it. I played with it for a long time...kepy a copy of it on a diskette..  :D
