Where did it go?
« on: December 03, 2009, 09:58:12 PM »
Alright, so I bought a new laptop a few months ago. It has a 500GB HD, and when it came, a little over 100GB was taken up by the programs it shipped with. It is now down to only 80GB free, and I cannot figure out where all that space went! I sat down with a calculator and went over the programs I have installed, and the numbers just aren't there. Does anyone have a way of tracking down just where all that HD space went other than going to every file on my computer and adding up the space it takes?

make sure you dont have any malware that is using your laptop as a storage area.  couple of months ago it happened to my cousin's laptop, we had to reinstall the os again.

Windows System Restore will allocate 15% of your hard drive. You can either turn it off or there is a command line to use to change the percentage.

Vista does a volume shadow copy of stuff inside the HD and that eats up lots of space. You can try the following:

If you have SP1 installed, at an elevated cmd prompt, type in

vsp1cln.exe

If you have SP2 installed, an an elevated cmd prompt, type in

compcln.exe

Also, search for 'Disk cleanup' and see if you have a huge hibernate file lurking there waiting to be cleaned up.

Also, Windows updates hog a lot of disk space.

Well there is your problem right there son...lol

Seriously it doesn't need to defrag every night or even every week/month depending on how much installation and other stuff you put on or delete.

Follow what the others say and just go through looking at system restore and a few other options.

You may want to use the decrapifier.

The key for me isn't really getting rid of it, I'm just really curious where it all went. Is there anyway to get like... a breakdown of what programs took up what space?

Used disk cleanup. Cleaned 6GB out. Brought up cmd and typed in compcln.exe, got this message: "This operation will make all service packs and other packages permanent on this computer. Upon completion you will not be able to remove any cleaned packages from this system". Before I continue, what does this mean to me? I don't know much about computers, but this doesn't sound like a good idea...

It means that your old service pack files will be cleaned away. You don't need them for anything, if you reinstall some day you can just redownload them.

My sister's laptop had the disk split into two partitions for some odd reason (from new). Her... I think it was like a 120gb drive was effectively reduced to 60gb (since she had no clue about partitions and default placement for pretty much any file will be somewhere on the C:\ drive). You may want to check that yours is not the same way.
