Is the 202/205 still rocket powered?
« on: October 18, 2001, 07:29:00 PM »
When people started complaining that the 202 and 205 weren't burning E, were outrunning everything but 262's, could leap tall buildings, were hitting on their wives, etc, I pretty much blew it off as the usual "Moon Landing A Guv'ment Hoax!" kinda thing you often see here.

Then I had about 6 of the little bastards chase me down while I was flying a D-9. Then a Mossie. Then a 51.

I was perturbed.

I've done zip testing of this aside from getting chased down in striaght and level flight by them. I know that the ability to do that is new; I used to fly both planes in the past because I occasionally like to surprise people and then die allot. And lastly, this was about a week+ ago, so I've no idea if the patches fixed it. So I'm asking.

What are you people looking at? I'll put the puppy down in my own good time.

HTC must have done a good job since we now start complaining about the 202/205  :)
well ive tried the 205 somthimes this tour and i kinda like it, it seems that people underestimate that plane and start all kinds of weird flying when meeting it, since they think its that easy a kill hehe.
But ive never seen any special level high speed in it without a good dive first ?
they musta been diving on you i guess.

Who's underestimating the C.205? Actually, it is badly flown like the Spitfire IX (check their stats). And they are two outstanding 1942-43 fighters. I'm always amazed when late war planes pilots think they are safe thanks to their speed monsters, sometimes they even try to zoom up  :D

The C.202 is the same cannon fodder as ever (generally speaking).
"And one of the finest aircraft I ever flew was the Macchi C.205. Oh, beautiful. And here you had the perfect combination of italian styling and german engineering .... it really was a delight to fly ... and we did tests on it and were most impressed." - Captain Eric Brown

The 205 is one the best kept secrets here, we should keep it that way so people underestimate you always.

I fly it(C205)my self and a lot of the time i get the edge because people underestimate what the AC is cabable of.

crazy dive acceloration, and extremely good vertical proformance and great turning at high speeds(300-400) make it a nice bouncing e fighter.

at 400 mph flying level you can pull back hard as you can and it doesnt stall and no stress sounds at all, it goes straight up.

One thing to note, at 500mph it is uncontrolable (with out using trim or slowing of course)

If I see the 205 get popular I'm gonna puke. Thats is appeal to me... nobody flys it much. Plus its a sweet ride...

Of course, I only see what he posts here and what he does in the MA.  I know virtually nothing about the man.  I think its important for people to realize that we don't really know squat about each other.... definately not enough to use words like "hate".

The 205 won't be popular because it can't turn well. And yes the taught of the 205 being popular makes me puke. HTC can you please delete this thread now?  :)

I admire 202 pilots.
Yesterday I was flying P-38L and a 202 tried VERY hard to HO me. He was very agressive at it too.

I didnt fire on the HO.
Any pilot thats brave (or stupid) enough to try a head on attack in a 202, deserves that I let him fight a few more minutes before I get annoyed and finish him off.

I wouldn't say the 205 doesn't turn well.

It's not Spitfire or Zero, but it can surprise any wary luftwabble and will get inside most anything else.

I have never seen 205's show any kind of uber speed.  But like the Bf 109G-2, they can completely dominate a Spit IX if they are smart enough not to turn constantly.  Better climb and speed up to 20k, good guns, and good ability to make the opponent miss his shots.  The main drawback for me is the canopy framing which blocks some views.

The C.205 is a great ride, and as Funked pointed out, the biggest handicap is the way the friggin canopy rails obstruct your view.

If you fly it agressively, it can put the fear of God in many an opponent. I fly it for the built in CD player with my favorite Puccini operas pre-loaded for every flight.  ;)

Well as I said, I've actually flown the 205 and 202 quite a bit. My very first flight in AH when I moved over from WB was in a 205, and since I got 3 kills in it, I was a happy monkey. Since then I've done well in it many times, and often fly the 202 to practice my close in ACM. Sort of like training with heavier than normal weapons to get better at fighting with real weapons.

Problem is, I haven't been up much at all this last 6 months. Then I go up when 1.08 comes out and get chased down by what appeared to be an Italian squadron (like, 6 of the little bastards). They were able outrun me in a D-9, a mossie, and a 51. That was what threw me, because I don't remember being able to do the same thing in the past. Then I heard a couple of other people complain...

So maybe something went squirrily, or maybe these guys were just using the plan in such a way as to get the best out of it in an environment where most people don't. Dunno, but that's why I was asking.

And yup Moose, it's -that- -Thog-. <grin> I miss the Haze, I really really do. If they ever make it over here I'd be happy to fly with them again. Just got fed up with WB. <g>

Good to see you again though!

One thing which completely amazes me is that 205 has an ENY value of 40 in MA! It is not the fastest nor the best turner plane, still it has lot of ammo, good punch, and has both good acceleration and performance on verticals.

When I am in YakU I would prefer to be bounced by spit IX than by 205.

I've recently rediscovered the 205, and it is one of my favorite rides - a good combination of speed, manueverabilty, climb, and guns... it is exactly what I wish the 109G6 was like, just for the meanness factor  :)
