Who fired the first shot?
« on: January 03, 2002, 08:12:00 AM »
I was reading a thread in the Aircraft and Vehicle forum where the battleship Schleswig-Holstein was mentioned as having fired the first shot of WW2.

I always thought it was Stuka's attacking key bridges in Poland to destroy the charges before the Poles could blow the bridges up.

There are some historians in the crowd...who/what did fire the first shot?

The first shot...
The first bullets were fired into german prisoners dressed up as polish soldiers at the borders
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

Agreed.  (Except that I thought it was a destroyer, not a BB.)

The Schleswig-Holstein was a pre-Dreadnaught battleship that Germany was allowed to retain after WWI. Her value was largely limited to being an effective floating battery. She was visiting Danzig under the guise of being on a diplomatic, "good neighbor" visit. Obviously, this was an easy way to preposition her for firing the first shot of a surprise attack.

You're all wrong, I fired the first shot of WW2!
One day I got drunk, took my gun, walked from france trough germany, as I reached the broder of poland I stumbled my gun fell down and fired a shot, boom, I wiped out that country.
Hitler saw all that, he walked up to me, said "Heil du penner"
And kissed me on both cheeks.
