I am mistaken.  I truly thought that the book said that Johnson was trying to crash his plane in order not to burn alive.  Maybe I am getting it mixed up with another story, or perhaps I read the story wrong at the time.  In any case, we can be sure that Johnson was happy that he didnt have to "suicide himself".

Hell of a lot of work to prove a point.......well done guys and thanks for the reading material. Coonts' book is very good as it is many short stories just like the one here.
