I came across a small story of WW2:

At FW 190 squadron, located 80 kilometers from the eastern front a pilot recognizes that his best friend is missing at rtb.
A comrade tells him that he has crashlanded near the front and he hops into the squads
Fieseler Fi "Storch" in order to search and rescue his fellow friend.
The place his friend crashed leaves only very small place to land and the russian tanks are closing in. Soon grenades exlode around and in third try he is able to land and pick up his friend. Both returned to active duty.

How about a Fieseler Fi "Storch" as SAR plane
without icon beyond 1k distance when flying below 500ft. Would be fun to get some fellow pilots back instead to see them as POW.
A score for "rescued pilots" could be implemented too.

Comments please

You know, this could really be fun, and a good way a pilot could maintain his streak.

Just imagine someone yelling over the radio "I need a PJ east of f21 about 5 miles"

(PJ=pararescue for you non AirForce people)

And then your buddy struggling thru hordes of fighters, in a little single engine utility to get you out in time.

Nice idea

Not a bad idea, but it would need some additional elements to make it workable:

1) Time limit. To add urgency, there would have to be a time limit to find and pick up a downed pilot.

2) Search parties. You'd have to have some ground pressure on the downed pilot. The closer to a field (or enemy territory) the worse it is.

3) A "surrender" command. Just in case it looks bad, or you can't hail a Storch for help, or you decide you don't want to wait and want to get back to the tower.

Time limit 10 minutes for a downed pilot to be rescued.

Search planes - Storch, Catalina, L-5 Birddog, Lysander.

When the player touches ground after a bail he can either remain active on the ground, or leave and have his 'ghost' remain to be rescued.  If the player stays on he can manuever his character around to evade possible capture - if he leaves the 'ghost' pilot will remain stationary until the rescue plane lands.

This concept would work well for the dedicated search & rescue pilot since each time a pilot bails he can leave a potential rescue target whether he stays or returns to fly.

If the downed pilot or his 'ghost' is rescued then that pilot is rewarded with his complete score for that sortie. If he is killed or looses to the 10 minute alloted time, he only gets partial score (same as being shot down).

This would make search & rescue pilots a valued commodity in the arena, and also boost their popularity among players.  Hell, even if a S&R pilot has to bail he can return to pick himself up.

I've been wanting this for a while.  It would seem like a real boost for diversifying strategy, plus make for a broader planeset.

Any comments on the future possibility HTC?

Ahhwww and think about all the other added fun .. flying low level support for the downed guy to keep those search parties of him .. (maybe if they implement trucks and jeeps sometimes there could be players out that have to CATCH that downed guy.. ege get a Catch score or sth.)...

Anybody know "Flight of the intruder"? ..
"DEVIL 505 keep your heads down Sandies are coming in from east to west!"

Anyhow GREAT idea!

A tad off-topic, but my fav Flight of the Intruder bit goes:

Intruder pilot: We got a Mig up here with us.

F4 pilot: Good. I'm coming. Don't let him get
          away.

Intruder pilot: diddly you!

In AH, it takes coding to have a pilot that's parachuted to the ground to suddenly move along the ground via your stick.  I'm certain this is no mistake.  I think as pilots we'll have the option of trying to make our way back to 'friendly lines' should we bail into enemy territory.  We'll have to brave enemy vehicles and ack, and maybe even a strafing enemy aircraft.  Otherwise, if in enemy territory typing '.ef' or clicking on Tower on the Clipboard would result in our being captured by the enemy.  No time limit is needed this way.

Adding SAR capability could be real fun.  Maybe we'd all be able to go after our downed wingie in some metal kite and save the time it would take to have them 'run' back to friendly lines.

Cool idea.

Nice ideas, but I think the result of being captured should be something more "annoying" to the pilot and his country... perhaps forcing him to fly with the capturing country until gettin 5 kills on his comrades  ))))
