Looking for a Program

I figured this was a good place to come to ask. I need a program/ a method to both cut songs into segments, and find a way to compress their size (At cost of quality). Basically, I want to make my own ringtones, but my new phone has a 300kb max size. Can anyone help?

I actually have a good chopping program that came with my PC. Problem is, I cannot find a way to shrink the size/cut the quality.

300kbs? Thats pretty small, my guess is they have to be .midi format.

While I know this isnt exactly what you are looking for but this can save you the time and effort.

I use myxer.com which people post ringtones already made of most songs and they can be directly sent to your phone free of charge.  Some ringtones do cost but most dont.

Just figured Id share in case you cant find a program or if you want to save yourself the time and effort.

Yeah, myxer is great. i do the same as Banshee, especially when I know what part of a song I want.

Audacity allows you to specify the format when you save a file. If you have the MP3 plugin you can specify what quality. If .wav, you can pick frequency and sample bit rate.

All of these are the settings that determine end file size.

The program I use gives me the same options. The issue I find is that even when I am taking a 5 second clip of a song, and I save it as MP3 in the absolute minimum quality its still in the thousands.

You are either saving directly as MP3, or saving as WAV then converting to MP3.

In the first example, what are your settings while saving the MP3?

In the second example, what are the settings for the WAV? Then what are the settings you're using for the MP3?

You can save a nice economic .WAV format then screw the pooch on the .MP3 conversion and (possibly) make it big again.

I was only doing the MP3 option. Would WAV be better? The MP3 setting is 32kBps in stereo.

32kbps stereo shouldn't take up much room.

Do a google search for dbpoweramp. It's a small program that converts from mp3 to wav and back again.

Then save your files in .wav format, and use the dbpoweramp to convert them (make sure you specify the quality in the program, it'll default to something high I think).

Try that. Just in the odd chance that your MP3 export isn't doing what you want it to do.
